Powder coating or spraying - alloy refurbishment?

I had a set powdercoated and then lacquered recently - they came up great, dead happy with them.

One of them has accumulated a stone chip down to the metal, so I certainly wouldn't say the finish is any harder than painting (although it does feel like it).

ohh dear

I think the consensus is get a proper wheel place to do it not a metal worker they overheat the alloys in he oven

I've seen many alloy wheels fail, just because those ones were powdercoated doesn't mean anything really. I've also seen many sprayed wheels look terrible, but I wouldn't hold them up as an example of every sprayed wheel.

Might seem like a daft question

After getting them refurbed, does the tyre fitting company fit the new valves to them?

Also, is there some kind of protective coating you can put on them to prevent dirt from sticking so much to them?

I've got a set of 4 that are going in soon for a refurb

Slap a few coats of wax onto them to protect them.

I've just sprayed some wheels in gloss black. Going to wait a couple of weeks for the paint to harden properly before going to get tyres fitted.

They'll be getting a few layers of Collinite before they go on the car to give the paint plenty of protection.

I ended up using my mate, who made this mix for me. The photo doesn't show it (camera phone), but they're quite sparkly, and in the light look awesome.

Chemical Guys Wheel Guard, I've been using it since buying new alloys a couple of months ago and it's brilliant. Dirt/brake dust etc are easy to remove now, a quick spray of some bilberry wheel cleaner and a hosepipe = clean wheels in a few minutes.

Hey guys,

Sorry to bump this thread again, but after some opinions.

What should I do with the centre caps? They're now slightly the wrong colour. Should I spray them black, or maybe wrap them in some carbon fibre effect vinyl?

Thanks.

thats one side effect with powder coating, you cant paint the plastic centre caps to match.

Not a fan of black or carbon fibre caps tbh.

Just what a few guys in the us said on s2ki, but powdercoated wheels CAN be weaker. Several of the guys running cars on track have had wheels split and crack. Something to consider if that set ended up on track

Unfortunately that's true. But I'm sure I can create something to match it.. or at least try!

I did email the companies you sent me, and all of them for "Subaru gold" was just powdercoated, and quite a dark gold at that which I didn't like.

my suggestion would be to spray them

Get a spare set of caps on ebay to experiment with, and try lots of gold paint from your local autoparts store. Rattle can variety, and see what kind of a match you can get.

as for the powdercoating, i had no idea that gold paint was so much harder then silver paint ! If they all said the same thing there must be a reason...

That's why I had my gold made :D

I decided to wax to seal them this evening, and I really am stupidly happy with them. When I had the wheels in my hall before the refurb I kept thinking what a crap colour they really were. Now I keep picking them up to look at them :)

Don't halfrauds make paint ?

Some semi decent pics of them. The flash still makes them look too yellow, but you can at least see the colour a bit better along with the flake.
