Hi

I recently had a set of wheels powder coated for cheap, £100 for 4 wheels...

However previously I had attempted a refurb and got so far as 2 wheels before the blood sweat and tears was too much :(:o

I had used nitro mors paint stripper to get rid of the original paint.

So I handed the wheels to the powder coaters along with the £100 (I was able to get it cheap as my dad uses the coaters for his work)

now some time later i get the call that they are ready, as my dad works near them he picks them up for me :)

Now bearing in mind he is longsighted he takes them home to me, 2 of the wheels are fine but the two I had attempted to refurb were crap!

The guy did say that nitro mors could ruin the powder finish but said he would have a go and try his best to get them looking ok....

The wheels with the nitro mors on them were awful with overspray on the spokes and with loose dirt powder coated over... :(

Im going to see them today but where do you think I stand? any chance of getting them to fix it?

I can't see how nitromors could ruin the finish, a thorough wash would get rid of it.

After I nitromors'd the laquor off my deep dishes and hand polished them, I washed them down and then polish and sealant sat on top of the dish nicely

Yeah thats what I thought, and even then they have done a crap job so I hope they will be able to fix them...

i'm not sure what the deal is with removing powder coating, but surely they'd have a sand blaster or bead blaster that could remove it

Apparently there is powder stripper, only available in industry which is silly powerful...wouldnt even like to use the stuff myself.

I suppose you can shotblast powder, Im worried they will say "we cant take the powder off" but surely I can call BS on that? "so if you mess something up thats it?, Kaput!"

well i just read a bit and you can remove it with alkaline strippers and also by bead/shot blasting lightly after heating to the point the powder paint turns to ash

they shouldnt say that

Sandblasting / Media blasting removes everything and will strip it down to the bare metal.

If they refuse to do it, get them sandblasted elsewhere and get somebody else to refurb them.

They should have shotblasted them first anyway. Sounds like they didn't bother

I'd also get your money back if they don't fix it, if they refuse get your dad to threaten that they'll lose his works business

Thats where it starts getting expensive...

So I went and complained to the manager and he said he wouldnt be able to sandblast it as there is a build up of 5 layers of powder, he suggested I find somewhere else with a bigger sandblaster (suggested companies)

The good news is he will powder coat the wheels for free when I get them sandblasted.
