Thinking of fitting a power amp to my Mk1 MX5. Have a Pioneer DEH unit (the same as AGW's as I copied him!) it's supposed to be 60W but when the top is down the radio may as well not be on when at motorway speeds. Therefore thinking about changing the speakers and fitting a good quality power amp. I listen to mainly classical and rock/indy/'60s anything other than dance/trance blah blah so a sub is not required or desired in my opinion. Anyone offer suggestions. The head unit cost me £150 second hand so is relatively high end.

I've got a fairly comprehensive install in my mazda running in at well over £1700, most of thats the HU mind, in the doors i'm running infinity components, they add fantastic detail to the music, dead crisp, for the money i don't think you can do better, got them for £100 new a year or so back but you can get them from e-bay for 40 - 50 now.

Amp wise i'm still on my vibe black box 1, its a very small and light amp which is why i selected it, moving to a Alpine digital amp soon since i want more power through the speakers but thats just under £300.

Thanks, no wonder you are always posting that you are skint! My car only cost £2500 so I won't be assigning quite the budget you have to my install. :)

Lol, sure thats me i think i've only posted that once :)

Get those components and you can have a similar amp to mine for just under £100, then you need a wiring kit but your work is easy since the battery is in the boot.

mm looks interesting. The amp you have does not appear to be expensive so maybe I will buy that and the wiring kit+ replace the speakers later. Probably should change the clutch first tho as it appears to be running out of life! Some 700 hard miles clocked up this weekend. Driving this car just gets better and better.

Yea its cheap as chips and performs really really well, very nice sound with the bonus of being very small.

Remember you need a wiring kit but since the amp aint that powerfull you can get away with a cheaper kit :)

Cool I know I'm now going off topic but...

Action list is as follows

Clutch £100 if DIY- £250 if fitted by garage
New Wing Still haven't replaced the crumpled one that was there when I bought it! £100
Respray and Underseal £900 (i know an old man)
Suspension £? Thinking about replacing/uprating this as am on the original 109k components

New Seats £? have the standard 1.8i which are not amazing. Not sure I want leather tho so am wondering what to get.

Turbo or Supercharge but that might not be for a couple of years

Where did you stash the amp btw?

Both the suspension and seats are a matter of how much you are willing to spend, i've changed mine to fully heated leather ones out of a mk2.5 Euphoric but that all costs.

How much do you want to spend on each?

My amp is in the boot, i ditched the spare wheel a while back and fitted all my ice in this space + it saves weight ;)

But your setup is diff, the amp aint slim enough to go under my seats, you need to check yours, you could always mount it underneath the glovebox.

mm don't want to give up boot space as we like to go camping with the 5- will investigate glove box area mouting. This summer we will be touring thru Europe with tent so anything that goes on holiday goes behind the seats or in the boot. I have already ditached the space saver reasoning that it is practically useless anyway since you cant travel at real speeds with it fitted. I would probably allocate £750 to suspension and £500 max to seats. How do you find the leather in the summer is it not sticky? I'm not sure I want full leather as much as I like it in my luxo barges. I guess I should maybe visit an MX5 owners club show and look for ideas and feelings.

My leather is fine, never had a problem when its hot, but then again i got it at the end of last summer so i aint had it during really hot days yet!

GAZ Coilovers are great so they say, just under £500 and then not much money to fit.

Seat wise if you want to keep the mk1 style look for some out of a VR limited or similar.

yes, my ideal mk1 (although i wouldn't want power steering) is the Mk1 Gleneagles.

In my view the perfect colour and lovely interior apart from the fake wood which is Mazdas worst hour in most of their vehicles from this era. Therefore I've always hankered after the sort of cream leather. Trouble is even tho the leather is "only" ten years old or so on most of these examples that are occassionally broken for spares it tends to be neglected having not been fed as it should.

Will rather than jemmying seats in perhaps look more towards reulphostering by a specialist.

I shall be interested to see how you find the seats this summer. I wouldn't need heated seats as although the GF drives it as daily hack at the moment this will not be happening when she hits 25 in a couple of years time because I can then put it on a limited use AON style policy and she will then have something else as the daily driver.

Another Mod that I will be doing however is a rear glass screen as the plastic one we have is scratched and useless as something to look thru!
