Power consumption of overclocked systems

I'm a bit excited! :p
Great info, thanks. A lot of that stuff with the chemicals is a little over my head, but it's great to see that 32nm isn't far off....

I remember switching from a 65nm e4300 to a 45nm e5300, and the difference in terms of performance, power consumption and noise was more than noticeable, so I'm hoping for similar improvements.

The only downside is that S775 is no longer being used, but lets face it, it's had a bloody good innings, my e5300 is running on a p965 chipset!

Prepare to be amazed?

http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/index.jsp <- power supply calculator with an overclocked CPU power calculator

Lets say a 920 i7

At 2.667ghz and 1.2v it nibbles 130watts

At 4.000ghz and 1.4v it munches 265watts

Woot. You just doubled its power consumption.

Overclocking is only free if you don't pay the electricity bill... :)

Except that calculator is flawed. The thermal envelope is not the same as power draw.

Those ones not concerned about excessive use of natural resources and disturbing climate should be thrown into middle of north Atlantic winter storms in rowing boats.

You want to throw human beings that don't agree with you to their certain deaths in the icy North Atlantic. Why?

There are worse ways to die than in a rowing boat. Perhaps there are better ways too, but then we're onto a matter of opinion.

No doubt my computer uses far more power than is sensible. That it spends (well, spent, and will spend) much of its time folding doesn't help with this. However, I don't drive, and will not drive. Therefore there is no footprint associated with any car I own and I burn through very little petrol. So my conscience is clear, which I feel is the important thing.
