.. Keeps spamming my phone with messages to do with work which are not relevant to me. My number wasn't volunteered to be used this way but was previously given so he could receive an update on an associate of his whom I accompanied to the hospital as a progress report. I've told him I don't want to receive them and it's a mistake but he disagrees saying it is to keep everybody in the loop.

Is there some reason why he doesn't use e-mail if these are just general information messages that don't require an immediate response and/or are just for keeping you in the loop?

Tell him you disagree and he can send you an email. He doesn't get to choose whether it's appropriate to sue your personal number as a work number, you do.

If it's a personal number tell him to naff off or you'll get the HR numpties involved (GDPR and all that nonsense).

reminds me a little bit about a guy at a place I used to work, he'd actually change his mobile number regularly because of people calling from work (account managers, consultants, support bods)... it used to be available BAs and developers etc.. but inevitably it would leak and other people would end up calling him at home etc.. eventually he decided that only his manager was allowed his mobile number and if anyone wanted to get in touch with him they'd have to call his manager first who'd then call him and he'd then phone in with a withheld number.... :D

The messages are related to general work duties that are not applicable to me. He's just being a ****

As mentioned, could block his number on your phone.
Alternatively, depending on your workplace - if he is sending work information from his personal/work device to your personal device, is this in breach of your company data protection rules? If so, maybe a word with HR (as mentioned) or if you have a compliance like team.

Tbh I'd probably spend a day texting him ever few minutes. "Having a poo", "just had a great breakfast" etc. Go completely OTT.
