Anyone just had this - suddenly all my lights go off - net cuts out - and whole area goes dark for 5 seconds - only laptop stays on!

Lights come back on - but house alarms go off near me - then same thing happens again - all alames go sillent!

So rather than hiding under your bed incase the lights go out again, you thought it would be best to go on the Internet? Shocking to be perfectly honest.

To be fair people have posted far more inane subject matter.

The last time we had a power cut I nearly went deaf from the whole avenue's house alarms going off.

my lights dimmed twice now you mention it, i was impressed my 360 didn't die, doesn't normally take much to confuse the power supply.

5 seconds? Nothing. Bad for PC though. Are are for over an hour at a time. Luckily they haven't been happening recently though.

Atleast you don't get trickle electricity when everything gets a slight bit of power, nothing electrical likes that :(

I'm guessing you don't live in a heavily urbanised area? Reclosers are only used on overhead lines because the chances of a transient fault occurring on underground cables is ~0, therefore a recloser would do nowt.
Interesting fact: the DNOs (United Utilities in Manchester) are measured heavily on CI (customer interruptions) and CML (customer minutes lost). If they can get your power back on within 3 minutes of an interruption they don't start counting up the CML. Companies like UU have invested MILLIONS in automation of switchgear etc to meet this 3 minute requirement. However there is still a need for engineers like me to get woken a 2am to go and throw a switch somewhere cause some eejit has dug through a cable on a building site etc etc.
