Bit of tourbleshooting for a power issue if you would.......

Twice tonight, whilst playing F1 2010, my rig has just powered out totally, as if someone had just pulled the plug out.

It has happened once before as well whilst playing L4D2.

Most of the rig is only a month old, the PSU is about 3 years old and I never had any problems with it before, which makes me think its something to do with the new setup.

I am running:

Asus P67 Sabertooth
i7 2600k 3.4GHz
Asus HD 6950 Direct CU II
16GB Corsair XMS3 1600
Engermax Galaxy EGA1000

Cut only happens when under load it would seem. Just in windows / web browsing it has never happened.

Memtest is OK.

I am thinking it could be the GPU or maybe even something to do with CPU?

Everything is seated fine. Nothing is overclocked.

Got me baffled a bit, not one I have come across before. I dont have a spare PSU to try and am a bit loathed at spending monies on one when I dont think that is it.

I do have a 8800 Ultra sat in a box, but it is half broken as it shows up red wavy lines over the screen, so not the best to test with.

Any ideas I can try before having to resort to buying new bits to test with?

My mate has that board, have you installed an extra fan on the removable part of the thermal armour? I believe that I am right in saying that the NB can get rather toasty otherwise.

No i dont have the additional fan - I dont think I can fit one on as the heatsink for the CPU comes over the top of the cover.

OK so my idle temps are 32c on CPU and 36c on GPU.

I have installed above programs - Got the CPU temps on my G15 screen, so I can monitor those in game and I have turned logging on. Not sure how I can see what the GPU is doing though - Nothing in the CCC to log temp from what I can find?

Will give it a go now just testing CPU temps.

Few minutes of play there and none of the cores of the CPU seem to going much above 53c

Will give it a 30 min session and see what happens

Cheers will give that a go.

No power out in last stint. Guess its a case of waiting until it happens again now.

Sounds daft, but double check your motherboard connectors are fully inserted. I had a similar issue, and honestly spent months with the issue. I eventually decided to strip the system down and start swopping parts only to find thr atx 24-pin wasn't quite fully inserted!

Just had another cut out.

GPU temp at the time was only 58.5c and fan only at 12% speed.

Cant find if the CPU temps have been logged, but didnt appear to go above 58c on the G15 display - most cores were in the 40s.

So doesnt look like it is temp related.

Going to look at the power cables, but I am sure they are in properly. I expect I would have had bigger issues before now playing Crysis2 if it were that, but it was fine. Totally baffled.

Run Prime95 to fully stress the CPU and have Real Temp or Core Temp open at the same time.

See what temperature your CPU gets to when it cuts out (assuming it does).

Core Temp

Real Temp

Have also now done Prime95 - Max temps get to are 65c and no cut out.

Any other ideas anyone? I have reseated everything again just in case and will test again later, but at the moment I am thinking one of my new components may be dodgy - but that would mean RMA on the lot with a note saying "please test all together by playing F1 2010" lol!

OK - Done that.

Temp gets up to 79c with the fan only running at 25% (up from 12% at idle) - Run for a while with no issues.

Also ran the timed one and got a score of 1971 @ 1920x1080 :)

Just played about an hour of L4D2 with no issue - Going to play F1 2010 again and see if it does it - If so then it must be something within the game which is causing something to trigger, but it just seems really odd that something like that is triggered by one game. Very weird.

Just a quick update to this ongoing issue.

Codemasters were pretty much no help. Basically told me to update drivers (well duh) then told me to disable every single one of my startup items then try the game again. I replied with some abuse at that point as it was clear I would get nowhere.

So the issue has 'developed' somewhat.

It appears the issue may be USB related. I am still getting the crashes, but on a couple of occasions the main power has remained on, but ALL the USB devices cut out - So it seems the issue is somehow related to something USB. I use a force feedback wheel to play the game (AC powered). My total USB devices are : Mouse (Razer Copperhead), KB (G15), headset (Gamecom), wheel (Forumula Force EX) and a Brother scaner/printer/fax combo.

What should I be looking for to see how the devices are working, as it is obviously the USB bus tripping the power out.
