Power issue with external hard drives

Hi folks,

This mayyy be a power issue but couldn't see a similar thread so hopefully here is okay.

I recently built myself a media PC, and due to the amount of files, I ended up buying a ICY BOX IB-3640SU3, 4bay USB3.0 JBOD enclosure. It is running 3x SATA drives, 2x 3TB and 1x 4TB.

On top of this I sometimes use a Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 external hard drive to ferry videos from my laptop/PC to the media PC.

The problem is this - it seems I cannot have both of these plugged into the machine at the same time. This is using the rear USB 3.0 ports, not the front ones. If I have them both in, there is a chance they will stay on, but once I start transferring from either device, you can be sure they will switch off.
Other times, Windows just plays those connection/disconnection sounds that it does, literally every second.

The specs are as follows;

MSI H77MA-G43, Intel H77
Intel Core i3-3220
16GB RAM
nVidia GeForce GTX 580
2x SATA, 1x SSD hard drives
Windows 8 64bit

The machine is powered by an OCZ 700w PSU, more than enough I would imagine!

The JBOD enclosure has its own power supply.

I have checked Windows' power settings, and it is not set to put USB devices to sleep or anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as to what may be going on here!

Many thanks
Mark

Does the Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 external hard drive have it's own power supply? If it does, that would be my first suspect.

Well what I have done is I've bought a WD My Passport 2TB USB 3.0 drive. It doesn't require its own power supply so will be interesting to see if this fixes things...

Thanks
