Hi,
my laptop lead seems loose in the laptop port and needs wiggling and placing 'just so' to allow recharging.
is there anything i can do to remedy this? i havent opened it yet and will do so if someone thinks there is a a remedy, can i pinch the outer sleeves tighter? does anybody know the answer, can the piece be replaced by myself, over to you guys and thnx.

ive repaired this sort of issue - usually the centre pin has torn loose of the pcb at its mount pin. often this breaks the plastic holder also.

tools to repair:

length of thin (single core prefered) wire, soldering iron (fine tip, tho i managed with a £5 wonder from a cheapo shop), araldite, bus ticket.

use the wire to hook from the centre pin to another point directly connected to the trace that was broken - the closer the better.
use araldite to repair the socket physically
use bus ticket, folded up, as an insulating layer between your repair and any conductive areas on the case (many laptops have a copper/aluminium sheet, that is earthed, inside the case to act as rfi shield)

if its still under waruntee tho - send it back. doing the above very very VERY invalidaes waruntee/garuntee and can easily make things worse if you do it wrong.

can you replace the dc input on a laptop yourself, i see it can sent away to do so, but i dont have the time and where would i get one if i need one, to do myself?

TIA guys

you didnt say what make your laptop was, but as Amonolyn said in his post, its a tricky job.
I have done a couple of toshibas ( i wish they had 90 degree power plugs) and you are better opening the laptop to reach the power socket on on the board. Then its a soldering iron and common sense time ...It all depends on how old the laptop is and whether its worth getting fixed professionally as well.... good luck

i had a compaq x1000 and gf has a hp nx series which i think are slightly notoriously known for fiddly dc connectors- both of us have had to twiddle that connection loads. ebaying your model and "dc connector" gives you some idea of the part you need to exchange it, but i have never attempted this, as it looked real tricky, and easy to zap yourself.

Just come accross this thread..

I too have a problem with my HP NX laptop and have ordered a replacement DC skt off The Bay.

Luckily for me i work for a PC repair company and one of the technicians can solder the new one on for me.

I'll post back once i've had it done.
