Far Far Away!
Alright guys, today we had new broadband installed. I was going to run an ethernet cable from my room to down stairs where the Hub is... but the cable was ugly and a bit too short to tuck it away nicely, also can't pin it to wall as renting the property.

so I went into the shop looking for a longer cable and then the guy recommended power line adapters. I ended up buying TP-LINK TL-PA411KIT.

I'm using them now and currently have no issues and full speed... What I'm wondering is; are TP-LINK any good as a brand, and should I have gone for the NETGEAR Powerline AV 500 Adapter Kit XAVB5201 for example.

TP-Link have a good rep and they've made millions of Homeplugs. Even OCUK sells them.

cool. i never thought about the brand when i was buying it. I've heard of tp-link before but i guess everyone is used to hearing netgear etc and go for them?

So no need for me to get a refund and swap them for the netgear, no difference in quality etc?

ok, i guess there is no need for me to get netgear ones? i can go to sleep a happy man? :P

I have a pair of tp-link ones. Have had them plugged in 24/7 for over a year and have had no issues at all.

I've got a pair of the TP-Link 500Mps+ units on order at the moment :) Expecting delivery today!

hello there! mine are up and running nicely still. There is one thing I'm unsure of, the box says "upto 500Mbps powerline speed ensures smooth HD stream transmission". So when I right click the network properties, it only shows 100Mbps. Is this normal? I've read that it could be quality of the line etc?

That's your LAN port. Definitely got Gigabit LAN?

hmm, it doesn't say gigabit on the box, should it say that, or where can i find out? On the side it say's "interfaces 1 * 10/100mbps port" Would I only know if i transfer something?
I'm not very techy with this stuff.

the model is TP-Link - TL-PA411
AV500 Mini powerline adapter starter kit.

Should i have gone for this one for example?

I mean I won't be transferring any data to another computer or anything. Just using the internet and didn't want it to affect my broadband speed, not that it goes over 100mbps anyway lol

This is the box for example that i have.

those TPlinks only have a 10/100 port on them not a gigabit. you would need the PA511's to get gigabit.

im honestly not sure why they make this version really. (i have them also but looking at maybe switching up to the 511's)

would i only need gigabit if im transferring big files?

using the same homeplugs trasnferring a file between my NAS and Server (through homeplugs and 2 switches) i get between 6.5 - 8MB/s

but as Woden mentioned above it looks as if youve only got a 10/100 port on your computer also
