Do these things really work?

My router is in the kitchen and running my Xbox on wireless was ok but the signal was never full strength and seen as I'm paying out quite abit for my PC I don't mind splashing out on a power line kit or getting a better wireless kit on the PC

My provider is plusnet and the kit I was looking at was the:

TP-Link AV200 200Mbps Mini Powerline Starter Kit Ver:3.0 £29.99

Any help would be apreciated thank you

Personally, I'd just buy some d-line trunking and cut holes in floor boards / ceilings etc, then use cat5e cable.

Do it right, once

TBH I have been using Billion Powerline Adapters since we bought our house in December. When they work, they are amazing. However, it often drops the connection between the adapters which is a real PITA if I am in a 2 Bn ISK Raven Navy Issue doing epic Lvl 4s in Caldari space :(

I am seriously thinking about finding a company to come and install CAT5 from the coat cupboard where the router is to my study.

I went down the TP-Link 200 Powerline Adaptor route, computer systems in the same room as the router/modem, just completely different ends of the room with hardwood flooring, so hacking it to put cables down is not an option, the other half wont have any of it.

On the top tier service (120) with Virgin, but the Powerline Adaptors are the weakest link, they download stuff around 4.0 MB/s maximum, which is the maximum throughput they provide me in the same room, so as long as you take this into account so you are aware of the limitations, you will be fine.

Personally look to put CAT5 down if you are able to and speed is priority.

This is my issue I'm also aware that the actual wiring loops is taken into consideration and tbh I do not know the history of the house I live in!

Will try and get it wired properly if it means waiting a little longer then I'd rather do that

Cheers for the replys guys most appreciated

If you really do need to use powerlines, there's a TP-Link AV500 kit which is around the same price if you look elsewhere. Gives me the full Virgin 60mb.

We check them out my power line adapter work ok but looking for faster ones when I upgrade my broadband to Sky fibre.

Im looking into powerline adapters too, I have just moved into my 2nd year uni accomodation, The kind landlord has put in a cable upstairs for us but my room is opposite and I dont really fancy ripping up all the carpet in 3 rooms just to get a cable underneath :/

Anyone had experience with the TP-Link AV500 kit with the passthrough plug socket. Are they reliable? We have BT Fibre about 30MB down on wireless normally but with 8 people using wireless its a nightmare.

I just bought them recently for a couple of WD TV boxes + Netflix. They've been crackin so far, Netflix (2 rooms, 2 boxes) goes up through the resolutions every few seconds until it gets to 1080p and just stays there like it does wired. Wireless was in and out of 1080p all the time as those boxes don't do 5ghz.

Not a thrash em until they die endorsement but it's an every day use so hopefully useful.

I used these, The one at the router is plugged into a 3 way adapter and the one by my pc is plugged into a 6plug extension lead which goes into another single plug extension lead to the wall socket.

Constant 20meg down and 2mbps up which is exactly what id get next to the router over wireless. Very pleased and have had no issues.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Trendnet 500 AV Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (TPL-406E2K) £33.95
Total : £37.86 (includes shipping : £3.26).

I have three TP-Link 200Mbps adapters, they're great. Been using them since December, only had to reset them once or twice I think. Very reliable, and performance has been solid.

I've used even basic 80Mb ones to decent effect. They work fine if your house has it's own earth wiring.

Lived in... 4 properties over the last 8ish years (settled now, was student) and only my current place has issue.

A lot of the 50's terraced housing has a shared earth so the wiring for it can be several miles long when it's all done. All that wire means the signals going into something of a black hole. The powerline adapters all use the houses earth pin for connectivity so there effectiveness varies according to the quality of the wiring in your house.

Powerline uses L+N, not the Earth.

If you look at a photo of almost any Powerline adapter with a US or European plug they're all 2 pin (unless they have AC pass through).

My Devolo AV200 adapters have metal Earth pins but they're aren't connected to anything internally.

My block is finally getting Hyperoptic Fibre, and I will be getting the 100MB package.

Things is, the faceplate can't be installed where my router currently is (I use a run-through phone-line to hook my master socket to the secondary in the lounge where my router is).

Would a 100MB powerline work in this instance? Or would even the best really knock off the speed? Cabling isn't possible.

I use adaptors and I have experienced zero loss of speed from the router. My house is 120 years old so have no real idea of the cabling. Some of it goes outside the house as my walls are solid. As your property is new, I cannot see you losing anything.
