Hi there

Long time windows user so this is my first mac!

Bought a "faulty" G5 off ebay (wanted the case for a custom pc build) seller said he tried to upgrade the ram and it had not worked since. So now I was sat here pondering if I should get it running before hacking it to bits and see what the fuss is all about.

Anyway it arrives, I whip the side of the case off and see that he has not put the ram in the correct slots! 30 seconds later it fires into life

Spec is

1.6 ghz
80GB HDD
1GB of ram

now, since i got it i wanted to play around with editing on the mac as it came with iMoive installed, but the system does like to lock up and beachball as its called,

Will fresh install of 10.5.8 help? or am i flogging a dead cat?

Any help or tips will be greatly appreciated

Thanks! :)

I'd say a fresh install was worth a shot, and software updates for everything won't hurt.

That said, if it's locking up there might be something wrong with the memory afterall.

Hey thanks for the reply.

i shall do that when i get a moment to my self!

and he said that it was working fine when he took the old 256mb ram out, but when he tried to install the 1GB he sed it had a red led on? but the ram wasn't in the right slots anyway

It would be very slow compared to what we have now but if you're curious and can give the OS a fair shot i'd say go for it!

My PowerMac Dual G5 is FUBAR. How much did he sell it for spares might i ask?

i won it for £50 plus postage,
the case is MINT! apart from some tea marks....

might clean up the room and post some photos at some point

Do they still use this case for the current Mac Pro line, or has it been modified since?
