Power Problem

Hey guys. Just had a quick search from here but couldnt see anything specific.

I have purchased some items from here and put them all in the case....

In simple terms, I cant even run the boot sequence without the power cutting out on it. I also cant get the fan spinning on the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 rev 2.

Specs: CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition 2.50GHz @ 2.80GHz
- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M770-UD3 (Socket AM2+) DDR2 Motherboard
- RAM: Corsair XMS2 (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel
- Cooler: Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2

XFX 5830 1024mb DDR5

Power supply, ATRIX 650W

What are the potential probs and solutions for both the fan and Power.

so does it show the bios screen?

or does it not even get that far?

any lights on the motherboard? fans spin up?
 
Never heard of Atrix PSUs before.

Your issue sounds so much like an issue I had today. PC contantly switching off during Boot, although mine restarts itself too.

I have determined that my 2 month old FSP power supply is broken on the 12v rail.

Maybe yours is having a similar issue, or it's a cheap supply that can't cope with the amount of 12v power your PC needs. Or maybe I'm wrong. Did you connect all the required leads properly?

Do you have any idea what 12v Amperage your PSU can provide? Does it have a label on the side?

I swapped my PSU for a previously known good supply and mine works just fine now.
 
I get the bios screen but then cuts out after a few seconds.
The SYS1 fan spins up but not the one the arctic cooler which is worrying me because i dont want to cook my processor.

Tealc, The PSU says 16A at 12V
 
so it could be shutting down because the cpu is getting too hot without the fan spinning.

try to carefully spin the fan with a finger to just get it started.

or double check the artic cooler connector is in the cpu-fan connector
 
stick it on then.

If you had a proper power issue, I would have thought the pc would have crashed when it was doing something stressful.

It sounds like the motherboard is switching off the pc due to either, no fan rpm measured or the temps are to high due to no fan spinning.
 
I would also try a different PSU. I did a quick google and there seems to be a few problems with it when powering top of the line parts, such as the 5830.

well, now i have put the stock fan in, i dont seem to get signal on the monitor. i think i may give up for tonight ant try tomorrow afternoon after work.
 
you moved the graphics card while fitting the cooler?

knocked the power leads into it?

monitor cable securely attached to it?

all stock coolers from socket 754 to am3 will fit, the only change to the stock retention bracket was from 2 to 4 screws holding it onto the board and that doesn't affect the clip style coolers only the ones that screw onto a bracket.

@ the op - sounds like a psu issue to me

Just 1 rail?

16 Amps of 12v goodness is not enough to run your hardware. 192 watts to provide power to an overclocked CPU, a hungry 5830 graphics card and other 12v stuff just doesn't seem very much.

The CPU will probably draw 100W at load. The GPU will draw around a 100W. It's hard to get reliable figures but I bet this is not far off. Do you see where I'm going with this?

I found a dual rail Atrix 650W PSU but that had 14A on one rail and 15A on another, it's clearly not that one. I found another one with dual 16A rails, retailing for around £25, so it is a very cheap price for a supposed high wattage power supply. My PSU provides 60A on the 12v rails. A big difference considering mine is 600W and yours is 650W.

Get a decent PSU.

A non-moving fan on an AC Freezer will not overheat the CPU in a few seconds, it would take a lot longer.
