Power problems

Over the weekend, my broadband and router power adaptors failed on me. This is strange because they were both connected to a surge protector. The broadband modem is the blue ntl:250 and the router: linksys wrt54g.

I've used a spare 12v power adaptor and they both seemed to work fine.

My questions are:

a) How could TWO adaptors fail at the same time when they were both on a surge protected cable.

b) The ntl:250 router needs a 10v adaptor - but seems to work happily on 12v, could this lead to problems later on?

Have any of you experienced this sort of thing before?

edit: I got a reply from NTL/Virgin that the broadband router has a surge protector built in. I had asked them for a new adaptor since I could not source a 10v one.

Surge protectors will only give a certain amount of resistance depending on the quality.

The only way you'll get a stable supply is to run a rig through a UPS. However, I've never had an adaptor blow like you have. Have you checked the fuses?

The fuses on the 6-way adaptor seem fine as the other components still work from it. It's just the two 12v/10v power adaptors that failed.

Strange.

Mmm As i said, if you have had a surge then your surge protector has dampened the effect but not enough maybe for the adaptors. The psu and other equipment is more likely to sustain some of the surge.
