Hey, I'm unsure what my power requirements will be for this system, currently got a 400w psu so Im pretty sure Ill have to buy a new one. Any recommendations for a cheapish one thats good value? Anyways the system is a

ASUS P5P43TD PRO motherboard
4x2gb 10600 ddr3
9800gt
2 internal fans
2 500gb hdd
dvd writer

Cheers for any help!!

haha yer I just realised that would be quite important..!! Its a q9500 and the current psu is a coolmaster 460 (rs-460-pcap-a3)

The coolermaster is not a great PSU ("More than 70% efficiency at typical load operation") but it should be good enough to power your system.

However, if you want to do an upgrade like adding a top-end graphics card, then I would certainly upgrade it to something like this.

I havent bought the motherboard yet either. Is the motherboard I'v chosen a decent one? Its got the new chipset in there so it should be good to overclock the cpu and I can pick it up for just over £60. Are there any better options for around that price?

Thanks for the advice as well. I think Ill pick one of those up, can carry it through to my next build when I upgrade in a year or so!

If I were you i'd be looking for either a P35, or preferably P45 chipset to get the most out of the CPU. Here is a very good board - probably one of the best LGA 775 boards there ever was and the price has dropped significantly.

Yer its a nice board and a lot of people have recommended it. The problem is I have nearly £150 worth of DDR3 memory and that board only takes DDR2. I was tempted to sell the DDR3 and purchase some DDR2 as I wouldnt really see the benefit with a 775 socket set up but it will come in handy when I do next upgrade in about a year or so, so I decided to keep it. I have had a look at whats on sale here but there are no 775 DDR3 boards with 4 DIMM slots. Decent 775 boards seem to be VERY hard to get hold of these days as well, that or very pricey for what you get!!!

I think I've got the power consumption of an 8800gt on these boards somewhere, a 9800 will be the same. Hard drives are 25 - 30W each at peak, normally much less. Don't know what processor you're using but it wont be over 125W unless it's seriously overclocked. The rest is negligible.

Based on this oldish thread, I measured 30W under load for one graphics card in addition to the motherboard supply. It also 28W extra from the motherboard under load. If I tested the graphics cards one at a time I didn't bother to write up the results though, so at best I can say the 9800gt will be under 100W.

I.e. 400W should be fine.

That price on a P5Q deluxe is fantastic. It's about as good as P45 boards got.

I still think upgrading the psu would br worth it for when you decide to upgrade. That antec true power that cmndr andi suggested is a quality unit at an even better price.
