Power Steering Problem

Hi,

I have a sort of problem in the Rover, just trying to fully diagnose it to see if it's worth fixing as the problem can be avoided. I shall explain...

On a cold engine at full lock the car is fine, you know you can push full lock a little bit more, perhaps 1-2cm more play in the wheel? well if I do that I get a nasty schreeking noise.

Had a fiddle today and found that on full full lock the PAS belt stops and the pulley on the crank is rubbing against the belt which the belt goes round. The Rover engine just has it's own belt espescially for PAS.

What would cause this to happen?

The obvious cure is to not whack it full full lock but I am selling the car to my mate and said I would sort out as many things as possible (hence been spraying a wing all day).

Any advice appreciated,

Chris

it's the pump working like a biatch to pump the cold powersteering fluid when your on full lock. Could be low fluid/pump on way out. Or just simply with this cold weather the oil is colder and therefore thicker and the pump struggles to maintain the pressure.sooo.
1 Check the Power steering fluid level.
2. if this does not fix it try a new pump from the scrappy or just learn to live with it.

I would presume theres a tensioner in the system somewhere? As said, its at full lock that the pump is working hardest and offers more resistance to the belt. If the belt is on its way out and has stretched a bit it might cause this or perhaps theres a tensioner that can be adjusted somewhere?

Failing that, fluid (as mentioned) or the pump itself

I think the pump might actually be used as the tensioner itself. Probably just needs a bolt or two loosening, tension the belt then do them back up.

There is another wheel, not sure if it's a tensioner or a pulley.

The fluid is a tiny bit below the min. line.

I think I will take some out the Mondeo and stick it in the Rover.

Holding a power steering rack against the stop puts a lot of pressure on the whole system, including the pump. You are essentialy telling the hydraulic part of the rack to move futher, but it's already pushing against a stop, so the hydraluic pressure increases significantly. There is a pressure relief valve to limit this, but if your PAS pump belt is worn, incorrectly tensioned or covered in oil, chances are that will slip before the pressure relief valve opens.

Ah, always wondered why it made the hissing kind of noise when it hit the bump stops. Now I know.
