I'm building a spare pc out of some components I've accumalted over the years and a friend of mine has kindly given me a GTX 280 to use. The only thing I need now is a power supply to get it all working.

Basically I'm looking for the cheapest power supply that will run this graphics card, he mentioned to me that it needed a 8 pin and 6 pin connector from the PSU but to be honest I have no idea what that means.

Would one of you kindly recommend me the most cost effective option here? Price is the main criteria, this PC is literally a spare and will mainly be used by the misses for office work and watching reruns of The Only Way is Essex so I don't want to waste money.

THANKS!

That OCZ one seems decent for the price, anyone have any cheaper ones? This pc will basically be a glorified word processor with occasional video, I don't even care if the PSU blows up after 12 month to be honest!

on the subject of power supplies,

is there somewhere where i could calculate what wattage i need on my psu to power my computer?

Its the addition of a GPU that requires a decent PSU. But if you want buy a generic PSU and replace the motherboard, gpu and hdd's etc a few months down the line when it blows.

I've had 3 power supplies blow over the last 8-9 years, all of them generic and none of them did any damage whatsoever to other components. This PC will literally only be used for typing out long documents that may be awkward on a laptop and to maybe watch a film once in a while, that's it.

I appreciate your concern but really I'm just looking for a cheap as chips power supply that will have all the right connectors for this GPU.

Well if you just want the cheapest and don't mind the pitfalls of a false economy, maybe this would suffice . . .

Not sure if OCUK stock this item though ;)

This isn't a false economy. There isn't going to be a huge draw on the PSU due to the nature of the PC's use, like I've said multiple times this is simply going to be a glorified word processor.

I upgrade my PC on a regular basis so if this blows up in 6 months it literally has zero impact on me other than having to move the box out of the way.

Seems clear I've come to the wrong place for advice but thanks all for your imput regardless.

Wow. Epic sense of humour failure. I did give you a serious option in the second post in this topic. My flippant post later, was just meant to point out that if you buy cheap, you often pay twice. Please get over your self.

Your input was a £50 PSU with specs way above what I needed. I understand the concept of a false economy which is why I attempted to highlight the fact buying twice was not a factor.

I also thanked you for your input regardless of these things so I'm not sure what I'm meant to get over exactly.
