Power supply issue?

Well I'm after a 2nd opinion really.

I switched the PC on this morning and within about a minute of booting into Windows the PC restarts, I think nothing of it and leave it to boot up again and then it cuts out and restarts again after a similar amount of time. This time when booting I get the option of doing a system restore and since something is obviously up I proceed with it and within a similar amount of time the PC restarts yet again, but this time during the system restore. After the 3rd reboot I switched the PC off, opened the case up, cleaned as much of the dust out as possible and reseated as much of the connections as I could without taking the PC to bits, so now I tried to boot for the 4th time and again it cuts out within seconds of booting into Windows.

So I go to look inside the case for a 2nd time and notice a burning smell coming from inside the case (smelt like the smoke you get from melting solder). The smell was coming from my power supply and as I touched the casing of the power supply I burnt my fingers, the heat was the equivalent of touching a saucepan that's been used to boil water so it was far from normal. I don't understand how it got so hot because all the fans are working normally and I'd only had the PC switched on for around 10 minutes on and off trying to get it to boot.

So does it sound like the power supply is at fault? Something is obviously not right with it when I burn my fingers on the power supply casing shortly after switching it off, but with this being my first issue with a failing power supply I'm unsure and I've not got a spare 24 pin power supply to switch it with to see if it is the problem. The power supply does seem to work at first and the fans are spinning constantly, but after about 1-2 minutes of use the PC just seems to lose power for a brief second and reboots.

So does this sound like an RMA? It's a Corsair Modular HX620W, was bought in January 2009 and it apparently has a 5 year warranty. Would this warranty be with OcUK or Corsair? (It's no longer listed on OcUK so it doesn't state whether they would handle the RMA or not).

Thanks for any help :)

Oh jesus christ, don't turn your PC on again and remove the PSU. It is a PSU issue you PSU is not safe at this point, it doesn't sound like it's affected other components though.

post in the shop forum (towards the bottom of the forum list) and ask the guys if the rma is with them or corsair, would imagine corsair but best to check first.

I thought about posing a thread there and had a look in that section, but it mentioned about them wanting an RMA number (I don't have one yet), so I thought I'd ask here first with the PSU being nearly 3 years old.

As I said it works very briefly and the system keeps rebooting every few minutes and I've no clue what's causing it. The only reason I believe it's the PSU at fault is because I burnt my fingers just by briefly touching the PSU casing and that's with the fans running on it as well.

As soon as I smelt something burning the PC was switched off and it hasn't been on since, that's when I went to investigate and ended up burning myself.

Sounds like its going to go pop any minute. I got a burning smell from my HX520 before it died. I never bothered contacting where I got it from about an RMA, I just went straight on Corsairs RMA web page & asked for an RMA there. All of Corsair's European RMA's go back to Holland, it would cost you about £20-25 to send it there (I used interparcel)

Have a look here for my experiences with Corsairs RMA process.
