Power supply recommendations

Hi

I have a HP Pavillion 500-242ea desktop computer and recently upgraded the graphics card to a Gigabyte Radeon RX 460 Windforce card and I'm pleased with it's performance.

After installing Fallout 4 recently I have started to experience a few problems, notably with the power supply getting quite hot. The current power supply says it can handle 260w at 50c and 300w at 35c.

Can anyone tell me if the Super Flower Golden Green HX 350W "80 plus gold" power supply would be adequate?

Many Thanks

Bill

First question is does the psu have standard connectors or ones that are unique to HP. A lot of these big brand computer manufacturers use connetocrs that only fit their own systems and I wouldn't want to recommend you something only for it to turn out to be incompatible.

I've now got around to looking at the existing power supply and it's non-modular. It has one motherboard cable with a connector which has 2 rows of 12 wires. It also has two other cables with connectors for the CD player and the hard drive. There is a spare connector on each for an extra CD and extra hard drive.

The power supply I'm looking at (Golden Green HX 350W "80 Plus Gold") is shown as having 1 x 20+4-Pin ATX12V/EPS12V. I can't see enough of the web picture to tell if that is the same as mine. I've taken some pictures but can't upload them.

The following list is from the HP website about the existing power supply

Power Supply
Internal 300W (100V-240V)
Form factor: Internal ATX
Total wattage: 300W
Nominal input voltage range: 200-240V/3A (50-60Hz)
Dimensions: 150mm x 140mm x 86mm (5.9 x 5.5 x 3.4 inches)

Motherboard description
Manufacturer: MSI
Manufacturer name: MS-7778
HP/Compaq name: JasmineR
SSID: 2AE0

The HP URL where these specs and others are is

If any one can tell me if this power supply will be suitable.

Thanks

Bill

Going by the stock picture of the motherboard it looks like standard 24 and 4 pin connections to me so yes the Superflower should be fine.

Many thanks for the confirmation. As luck would have it Overclockers has the Golden Green HX 450W "80 Plus Gold" for the same price as the Golden Green HX 350W "80 Plus Gold".

Needless to say I've placed an order for the 450W one so will see how it goes when it arrives.

Thanks

Bill

Yes, that's a no brainer and a cracking deal. Good buy.

Thanks. It arrived very promptly and seems to be very quiet and running a lot cooler than my original PSU.

The only problem I had was that it was slightly longer than the original and wouldn't lock into the front retaining clip. At present it is being held in by the 4 rear screws. Is this a problem and should I try and support the front edge?

Thanks

Bill

What was the original supported by a little bracket or something? I tried to google some images but couldn't find any showing a clear picture of the front of the psu. It should be ok as psu's were only held in place by the four rear screws up until about 8-10 years ago. I suppose the worst that can happen is that the weight of the psu distorts the rear of the case which would cause the front of the psu to droop down. May be worth trying to diy something together. Maybe even a cable tie arounf the bundle of wires coming out of the psu and fixed to the top of the case somehow.

I see it, that little latch at the front? If the case is a decent thickness at the rear you should be ok without it and like you say, those two guides at the rear will help as well.

I decided to support the front edge with a cable tie loosely around the cable bundle so I feel that will do.

Many thanks for your help.
