Hi guys,

I have just reinstalled an old 290 in my rig and in games it is constantly running at lower speeds, is there a way for it to run at full 1040mhz in 3D games because right now it fluctuates anywhere between 700mhz and 1040mhz, which is quite noticeable in games like Planetside 2, Battlefield 4 etc

I installed MSI afterburner for a custom fan profile and these are the settings that are running in the software. Powerlimit is +50 in both Afterburner and AMD Overdrive, the core is bumped up to 1040mhz in MSI.

I remember having this problem before when I initially bought the card and there were settings on the internet somewhere for afterburner, which did fix the problem but I cannot remember what they are!

Thanks for any help

I installed asus GPU tweak, went to professional mode and clicked on "always use 3D clock" then apply.

this gives you the correct core speed in games etc as I get the same issue on my 390.

I don't use afterburner so don't know the fix as I use the above work around.

Just to clarify sorry, I had this issue before Crimson drivers.

Thanks man, gonna try Asus GPU tweak but do you know if it has custom fan curve? That's the only reason I use MSI afterburner.

Cheers mate

Since you have already increased the powerlimit to +50, the next most likely cause of downclocking is the CPU not keeping up- which CAN occur when playing PlanetSide2 and BF4 online when there are crap loads of things happening at the same time.

It is something to do with the limitation of the inefficiency of our current directX available- which dx12 is hoping to address for future game titles.

Cheers mate for the info, I do remember having this all working though at one point with MSI afterburner and powerlimit 50+, just can't remember the settings :(

Tried GPU Tweak and it did make it run at full speed but it means it's running at full clocks even in 2D, gosh these 290's are a pain in the ass!

If the max clock is 1040, then try setting it just above in an Afterburner profile, as im sure you have to go higher than stock for it to lock.

I wouldnt force 100% clockspeed and voltage all the time, i would try and find out whats causing the usage drops, like what others have said maybe throttling or bottle necks.

If ya get stuck just make a profile for 500/1000mhz @ about .95v and save it then you can set that as your 2d profile in after burner settings, then for 3d use your 1040/1250mhz profile. I had to use this for unofficial overclocks before when the official ones wernt allowing enough voltage. If the 2d/3d clock prfiles arent switching properly as they dont always, then just bind each profile to a key and use the 3d one when your load a game, but i would be finding out whats causing the drops instead of all this.

turn off the option after you have finished gaming and it will go back to idle clocks :)

this is what I have to do with my 390, its a pain

What does gpu usage look like In afterburner? I have to enable unified gpu usage monitoring at the bottom of that image you posted for afterburner to measure correctly

Temps are never above 70c and don't think there's any bottleneck going on as the 3570k runs at 4.3ghz constantly, even when the card drops its clocks.

I haven't enabled frtc in radeon settings either, really not sure what to do.

I definitely had it setup at one point where when I launched 3D applications it ran at full 1040MHZ then when back to desktop it ran at 300mhz.

Even with the CPU overclocked, it is still very possibly for CPU bottleneck when gaming online with lots and lots of players; singleplayer games not so much, because they would only render certain fit numbers of things that will be going on at the same time at certain moments.
