Hi All,

I have a WD4001FYYG SAS drive and want to know if it possible to get this recognised within a normal computer ?

I have purchased a SAS to Sata cable but when connecting it does not power up the hard drive ? Is there something more I need to do ? Do I need to jump any pins on the drive ?

This is the cable I bought

Any help appreciated - is this possible what i want to do ?

Thanks.

The drive probably won't spin up until the SAS controller tells it to.

If you want to use a SAS drive you'll need a SAS controller of some sort. It won't work on a SATA controller even if you can physically connect it.

SATA controllers only support SATA drives.

SAS controllers support both SAS and SATA drives.

Thanks for the reply - could you recommend a SAS card ? I would be ideally after PCI-E 1x if possible .. or PCI - though i suspect there isn't a card with PCI connectivity ?

Also, is it possible to get a SAS card with SATA ports ? Then I can use that cable .. I am thinking it may be best to go mini sas though and then connect / power separately with the cable

Cheers.
