Hi folks, I'm looking for a bit of advice...

I will be moving into a new house at the start of December where I will at last have the perk of a PC/Gaming room of my own.
Now, the router, TV, Xbox, PS3 etc will all be downstairs in the living room, with my PC upstairs until I decide on a final layout. I have a box of Cat5 available but I don't want to run any cabling (lazy I know) and don't want to use wireless as I will be streaming HD movies etc from the PC.
Hopefully the upstairs will be on the same wiring loop (I dont know much about modern wiring, the house is ~3 years old)

Has anyone used these:
Netgear AV Powerline Adapters

Throughput is rated at 200mbps. now I doubt they will acheive that but if anyone has used them I would appreciate some feedback, or evan an alternative.
I like the idea of these as they can be moved from room to room should the setup change in future

Great price on those, I didn't even check if OCUK sold them!

When you say moments, what do you mean exactly? Random disconnects or something?

Avoid the netgear. I had those and throughput fluctuated massively for file transfer and 1080p streaming (which it couldn't sustain...).

Now using the devolo AV200 plugs which are superb, not missed a beat for over a year. One is behind an RCD (in conservatory!) and wiring is 30+ yrs old and it eats 1080p for breakfast! Wouldn't ever go back to wireless for desktop use!

I notice almost all other websites have dropped prices and are mostly out of stock of that particular Netgear homeplug (200mbps).. Hmm....

Exactly the same experience, the Netgears were awful and broke in months. The Develos are a much better network connection and reliable.

For the original poster, you will probably have issues between the two floors as typically they will be on a seperate ring main. Cant tell without knowing how the wiring in the house is. But thats pretty much the standard, particularly in new builds.

They are a much better option for me as i'm in a moderate density flat block and each unit has it's own trip switch / meter. There's too much wifi interference from the neighbours.

I've got a pair of the 200Mb/s TP-Links from OCUK, great price (£44 for a twin pack) and they perform brilliantly, sync at 197Mb/s and that gets me around 80Mb/s real throughput which is plenty for 1080p.

are these good to use instead of a wireless adapter for the PC?

Yes most definitely, main reason for having one imo.

Mines have been running 24/7 for a year now and not a single fault. Using a value double pair (£40) from a competitor.

Thanks for the input folks.

I'm guessing newer houses are a bit hit or miss with regards to connectivity due to current wiring standards?
