Is there a difference between in reliability between powerline adapters, as they seems to vary a lot in price.. can get starter kits from £30 upto £100. Are these cheaper ones as reliable as the more expensive ones?

Over that range of cost you can't bee comparing like with like. AV200 kits start at about £30 but don't really go over £50.

Anything over £50 is going to be AV500, have multiple Ethernet ports, have a built-in WAP, etc.

I've dealt with quite a few sets and the only failure was a relatively expensive Devolo adapter (which was quickly replaced under warranty).

Also make sure you get ones with 1000 megabit network ports, else you will be stuck at 100 megabit speed maximum.

I know it sound obvious but 80% of 200-500 power line adapter, come with 100 m/b ports so you will never attain speeds you want.

Also you should only expect around 1/3 the claimed speed because of marketing and overheads.

The marketing is that powerline adaptors are not duplex. A 200Mbps unit is 100Mbps in one direction only, but it goes both ways therefore it's a 200Mbps unit.

The overheads are all the error correction that the unit adds to overcome mains cabling.

So a 200Mbps pair will max out at ~60Mbps, 500Mbps @ ~150Mbps and 1000Mbps @ ~300Mbps.

The only thing I found to be a problem with the 200Mbps one is that I couldn't stream 1080 video over them. Other than that they were great.
