Hi all. I need to add a wifi hotspot to the end of my garden, and might also end up streaming to a chromecast or firestick (will use ethernet for these).

Never used a powerline set up before - will they have any issues going through consumer units (it will be running through 2)? Also I have seen some people talking about passthrough but can't find a clear definition of the meaning.

Would speed should I be looking at? I'm not so bothered about fast file transfers, just streaming and browsing on mobile devices mainly.

Cheers:D

Pass through just means that there’s a mains socket on the front of the unit so you can continue to use the socket to power something else.

Whether they’ll connect where you want them, and how fast they’ll be if they do, you’ll only know by trying. What you’re describing is far from ideal.

I've got about 8 powerline devices working throughout my house and garage with no problems. I have 5 mining rigs attached, a PC and a smart TV, I haven't seen any noticeable slowdowns, even when the main PC is downloading at full available speed from steam and i'm only on 22mbit/2.7mbyte.

3 of the devices are on 4 way adapters as well, not in the main sockets.

thanks chaps. I was looking at something like the TP-LINK TL-WPA281Wi-Fi Kit AV200 or maybe TP-LINK TL-WPA4226 Kit Av600 - any thoughts?

I wouldn't buy anything still based on AV200.

You say you have two consumer units. Are they both connected back to a single supply (i.e. one meter)?

What would you recommend going for? Don't really want to spend much if possible. Yes all from a single meter, but I have one in an old outside toilet distributing all the outside power, and one in the garage distributing power in there.

I wouldn't use Powerline at all if running a cable was even remotely possible.

For Powerline pick a set that are AV600 or better. There's no guarantee that what you're trying to do will work at all so choose a supplier with a sympathetic returns policy for opened goods.

sure thing, thanks for the advice. Are other brands worth looking at - or stick with TP-Link?

I've used TP link for about 7 years in regards to powerline, always been great.

I still run my 8 device setup from the first plug I bought 7 years ago.

I've had Devolo PL plugs (AV500 IIRC) for a couple of years now. Use them to get the network out to the garage as there's no easy cable route - I'd need to do a lot of trench digging and lift some block paving. I think the Devolo app shows speeds of around 200Mbps and they have been totally reliable.
