I am installing a simple two IP camera system in a small building which has no Internet/router etc. Keeping costs down and the fact the kit has to be in a weatherproof enclosure, can Powerline adapters work without a router? Not sure if they are assigned an IP as I don't work much with them.

I am using a 4xpoe switch and don't need a router as kit will have its own static IP and its one less device to use.

Like Bremen says, no IP except specific scenarios. From experience I'd suggest that you check that the electrical sockets in the outbuilding are on the same ring as wherever else you're routing the powerlines to. Also they don't work well on extension leads if that's a consideration.

Think of powerline adapters as 2 ends of a cable, they don't have a network config themselves in their simplistic form, once the 2 (or more) adapters connect to each other, you have a "cable" between them.

Thanks for that. The nanostation is a backup job if the powerline method fails.

Is it me or have the Nanostation's got more expensive?
