Hi i'm not very good with the whole networking thing and so i'm seeking advice before i make this purchase when back in stock.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-070-TP&groupid=46&catid=1604&subcat=

Thing is i live in a shared house so as you can imagine, gaming on a shared router is impossible at peak hours. I currently pay virgin media for fibre optic at my ex girl friends house, so i will be having it installed at new adress, but she threw out my router when i had the connection DC'd.

I was wondering if using the above would work if it was plugged straight into the virgin mobile box? or do i still need a router as well :S

Sorry i know thats lame question but as i say i'm poor with networking.

Also can any1 suggest whether this option would be useful for gaming purposes?. My whole thinking on the matter is it would stop my house mates resetting a router to default password and accessing my connection as i would have the recieving end in my bedroom.

Also i live in a large 7 room house, would the fact that so many people live there using electrical appliances, would that slow the speeds the connection would give? If so would it be more advisable me getting a router? ( which i'm hoping is not the case )

Many thanks for any replies.

This forum served me well before when they suggested Razer deathadder mouse which i found awesome, so i thought i'd try again :)

What you describe with the Powerline adapters should work, but only for a single wired device.

The only way you're going to stop people getting access to your connection is to have the coax terminating inside your room and keeping the door locked. If any of the equipment is in a communal area then it'll be fair game (router or not).

If you have Virgin cable installed won't they supply you with the equipment you need to use it? You'll probably get supplied with the 'Superhub' that combines the modem and router together.

Yes but this is what my ex-GF threw out. Virgin want to charge me 75 pound for a replacement on top of 50 pound installation fee for something that will be installed in a communal lounge.

My housemates only hook up wirelessly so having the TP-link sounded like a good option for me as i would have the recieving end in my room. I have a V'media modem from previous services before i got the superhub so i could use that. Ty for letting me know that it would work.

Do you have any idea how well these powerlines keep their signal? Thing is i'm crazy on crysis and especially with C3 on the way i want to maintain a sub 100 ping

ty again for response

No guarantee that they'd allow you to use an old modem, and it is something they have complete control over.

If they're wanting to charge you for a replacement Superhub then I assume you're still under an existing contract?

The Powerline adapter you've linked is a single item. You'd need two of them (it obviously makes more sense to buy a kit of two).

Using Powerline adapters to get the connection back to your room is fine, and should be better than wireless for gaming. I would still use a router of some sort, even if it's just for the firewall.

Assuming they did allow yo to use the standalone modem then the router could be in your room connected your end of the Powerline connection.

Stupid question:- if you're paying for the installation why does it have to terminate in the communal area?

Hey ty for the sound advice i didn't think about putting the router at my bedroom end.

As for the terminal in communal area.....

Well my room is on the 2nd floor. As in ground floor, 1st floor, then mine.

So there would be no chance of installation up there.

You've cleared a few things up for me though thank you very much bremen

I recently tried the mini TP-Link 500Mbps (TP-Link PA411KIT) ones which most likely use the same internals. In my house from first floor front to ground floor back they were unusably slow.

They synced at 14-18Mbs and gave a throughput of ~7Mbps. The fastest I could make them sync between any upstairs room to the ground floor was 33Mbps.

You'll most likely be fine but it's worth bearing in mind. The majority of comments about them seem favourable so I think I'm just unlucky.
