I have a pair of TP-Link TL_PA211KIt 200Mbps Powerline adapters. One is plugged directly into the wall, the other is on the end of an 8 meter extension lead.
It did some tests moving a 790mb file using the Powerlines and then a direct connection using a long Ethernet cable, repeating each four times. The results were:
With the Powerlines, it took on average just over 10mins, 1.3Mbps.
With the Ethernet cable, it averaged just over 7.5mins, 1.7Mbps.
So there's a fair difference when copying files over a network, but it's still fast enough watch iPlayer in HD (not particularly fast broadband here anyway).
Would 500Mbps Powerlines be faster in this instance, or will my router, Technicolor TG582n, restrict the speed anyway?

You need to be careful with your use of bits and bytes. Your Powerline connection is managing 10Mbps, and the cabled connection is managing 14Mbps.
That's a pretty poor showing even for the older model AV200 adapters you're using. I'd get rid of that mains extension lead and see if that improves the situation before buying AV500 adapters.
Hopefully both of those speeds are downloads from the internet rather than local transfers. If they are local transfers something is massively under perfoming.

The hardware at the other end is probably causing the bottleneck. The Powerline / Ethernet is plugged into an Asus WL500g Premium V router, which acts as a secondary hub to my smart TV, PVR and Blu Ray Player. The Asus also has a USB 2 port and I have a 1tb portable HDD connected to it. The tests earlier were copying a file from this HDD to my PC, which is connected to my primary router.
I've taken the Asus out of the equation and plugged the Powerline / Ethernet directly into my Humax HDR Fox T2 PVR. The results were faster, even more divisive:
With Powerlines it varied from 1.6 to 3.7 MB/s
With Ethernet it varied from 4.9 - 8.1 (but generally over 7) MB/s
Would replacing the Asus with an Ethernet switch help? I won't have the USB port anymore, but am looking to get a NAS at some point anyway?
Will 500Mbps Powerlines speed things up? I think my router speed is only 100Mbps anyway?
Can someone let me know if 500Mbps would speed things up in this case? The router could be the limiting factor, but I'm not really very knowledgeable about this sort of thing. I think I still have time to return them and get some 500Mbps one if it will make a difference.
