Powerline problems

So my friend has been suffering very poor wireless signals in his university accommodation, he's only 15m away from the router but has very thick walls weakening the signal. So then I suggested powerline adapters.

This is the kit he bought: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-032-TP&groupid=46&catid=1604&subcat=

Now the thing is he plugged in everything correctly, but the two adapters can't seem to detect each other. He then tried plugging them to power sockets that are next to each other, but they still can't detect each other.

Also, the manual is plenty confusing, I had a read myself and I got a bit confused as well. With my Netgear adapters all I had to do was plug everything in and that was it, where as this one he has to press buttons to sync them together? The instructions on doing this is pretty confusing as it talks about the Power LED and not the Powerline LED. Can anyone who own these adapters help out on this? I can't physically help him either as he's miles away from me (He's in Brighton, I'm in London).

Are the sockets completely seperate or double sockets? If they are seperate could it be they are on different phases? I am pretty sure that stops them working, although I have never actually used them so only based on what I have read.

He tried them on double sockets to ensure they're on the same circuit just to ensure the adapters are not at fault, but sadly they still can't detect each other.

Presumably they come with some sort of management software?

Connect each one in turn to the PC using a network cable and check that the management software can talk to them.

Try them round yours just to be sure then contact their support or return them.

As I said in my first post, we're miles apart, I can't :( Plus we both are now busy with university so I can't travel to him or vice versa.

He's going to talk with his landlord now to try move the router to a better place, but so far no luck with it. The landlord seems to enjoy having having a TalkTalk router locked in his room...

Has your friend plugged one end of the powerline into the router first. Maybe this is why they are not syncing with each other.

Bashy

plug em both into a 4 way non surge protected gangplug and retry

Tried that as well, infact I suggested him to try that before the double socket test. Still nothing :(.

Already tested this as well. It's becoming a mystery now...

Yeah he's going to refund them now. Seems he managed to persuade the landlord to run a long cable from the router to his room.
