I just got a Mactel and migrated my stuff from my pb, and now there is an icon on my taskbar for a dialup modem, no doubt a remnant from my PPC mac, how do I get rid of it - it doesn't show up in Network prefs naturally.

thanks

on a side note, I forgot to completely reinstall OS X, I vaguely remember someone mentioning soemthing about how you can get rid of all the bloatware without reinstalling, so if you could help me with that too that'd be awesome.

EDIT: stuff i download to desktop doesn't show up...

EDIT 2: in finder my computer is called 'Administrator's Powerbook 12'...can't figure out how to change it...

To remove the Dialup icon, go to Internet connect (in applications) and there is a checkbox to remove any dialup connections from the task bar.

To change the Machines name, go to System Preferences and click on sharing. Change the Machine name, and quit system prefs.

Not sure why downloaded items are not appearing on the desktop, are you sure that you are downloading to the desktop?
What browser are you using?

Just a quick tip for every one in the future, many of the task bar icons (actually known as MenuExtras) can be Command (Apple/Cloverleaf) dragged off and moved about. This normally only applies to apple's ones not 3rd party applications (AdiumX for example can't be dragged).

As for downloads in Safari go to Preferences (Command + ,) then set 'Save downloaded files to:' the desktop (if its already set to Desktop try setting it to Documents then setting it back to Desktop).

Hope this helps, also am I right to assume you used some thing like Carbon Copy Cloner to image your PPC onto an Intel? If so that is a new thing I learnt today I didn't think the whole operating system was compatible like that!

You are correct, the OS binaries are not compatible between PPC and intel.
However if you use the system migration tool bundled with OSX, you can migrate all the app and user data from the old mac to the new, even if the old mac is a ppc and the new mac is an intel.

Works like a dream, aside from a few apps (MS Office and CS2) not bringing the license across onto the new machine.
