Practical advice on upgrade from 2500K

yes a old i5 which dont cut it for pubg.and a nearly 4 year old gpu.

modern intel and modern nvida card i should have said.pubg is a 2017 game.you need pretty modern stuff for it and even the highest gpu and cpu can drop in places at 1080.

if you want the best performance for 1080 res high fps. you want a 1070 gtx or 1080 gtx.they actually beat a 1080ti at 1080 res.price is pretty poor value on 1070 gtx at moment though.1080 probably better value but at 1080 res in pubg the fps difference is almost identical.

cpu wise if new wait for coffee lake.if you building your rig soley for pubg.intel is quite a bit infront as many benchmarks show for pubg.

what you could do is if doing a full upgrade is buy a gpu first see how it runs on your rig.if you find it exceptable (everyones different) then just play with new gpu or if still not happy upgrade mobo and cpu with coffeelake.

gpu benchmark

The game runs like a dog even with a £5000 machine.

an i5 and 970 is plenty to play this game. tho 8gb ram isnt enough. no matter what spec the machine is, graphics settings need lowering for more fps and to make the game look better

in your mind its plenty in many others it isnt.lows of 30-35 fps isnt good enough.for most people.also factor in many people have modern monitors.some people will play on low fps and except it.thats fine.

i did say lower the settings all low and textures ultra as it doesnt effect too much and view distance max.

At 4.8ghz you are going to really struggle to get a worthwhile cpu upgrade on the same socket. Even if you bought a 3770K, an average overclock will probably give minimal performance improvement even in heavily threaded games that can take advantage of the hyperthreading. In other words I'd imagine a 2500K @ 4.8 is going to remain reasonably competitive with a 3770K @ 4.6 for example. Given you are looking at a system upgrade in 2018 I would just hold fire until then and put the money you would have spent on a new cpu today towards that.

Looking back over history this isn't all that surprising really - I can't think of a time when I've seen a 6.5 year old system (mobo+cpu) that is worth swapping out the CPU unless either it was a weak cpu to begin with (yours isn't) or you are able to find some sort of secondhand bargain.

at the end of the day shape your upgrade path to what you want not others.

i would personally save your money and get a coffee lake upgrade.will be a big upgrade to your current system and faster than any ryzen offering ingames.

Once you get the itch that's it. A 3770K would drop straight in and give you a nice boost. Check the members market as a very handsome forum member is selling one currently!

what FPS are you getting in PUGB ?

I have my 2500k clocked at 4.5ghz with 1080 ti at 2K and get around 60 / 45 FPS constant is that normal ???

I do have everything on ultra.

with a modern overclocked cpu you could get upto double that.especially on the minimums.people really need to know how much a good cpu changes the performance on pubg.

friends just gone from 2500k and 970 to 7900x and 1080ti.he was getting lows of 30/40 fps at 1080.now 120 fps at same settings.

yeah but his VRMs are about to explode dude. duh

Turning the shadows and post-processing down to very low will give a significant performance boost.

If you try it, could you let me know how it goes? I have a [email protected] and I'm mulling over replacing my 1070 with a 1080Ti; my frames are around 65-75. If the game is actually more CPU bound, I'll put that cash into buying an 8700k in a month instead.

So we are probably looking at a 1070 or second hand 980 then?

980ti.

I had a 970... it's not a bad card but last 6 months or so started the struggle at 1200p.

The CPU is also a bottleneck, doesn't matter how you dress it up, an i5 is a bottleneck.

But your short of cash so it's all about bang for buck, I'd say yea, something like a Vega 56, 1070 or 980ti would be good.

The cheapest of those lot would probably the second hand 980ti.

But before you do anything.... how much money can you comfortable put together for an upgrade?

Am I right to think that the main benefit of a 3770k over a 2500k is that it has hyper threading for an additional 4 cores?

It seems that although it is also a bit more efficient, runs a bit cooler, uses a bit less power - these are small gains.

I'm thinking that if the main benefit it the hyper threading then a 2700k is also a sensible upgrade.

I'm doing the upgrade from my 2500k this week hopefully. After searching around for what feels like ages and then constantly flip-flopping between choices, I've finally settled on a Ryzen 5 1600 setup. It seems like a great value for money proposition and hopefully, will be as long lasting as the 2500k!

I went from a 2500k to a 1600x a couple of weeks ago and you can really tell the difference, especially with minimum frame rates. If the budget allows get some decent ram that will do 3200Mhz too as that will also make a big difference when paired with Ryzen chips.

A few months ago I went from a 4.6Gh 2500k -> 4.6 Gz 2600k-> 4.8Gz 7700k. I can tell you each different CPU gave an appreciable improvement when running my 1070. The 2500k does not cut it like it used to. I ran one for about 6 years. Its the best cpu I every owned, but its a bit long in the tooth now.
