Hello!

I'm going to Prague for Christmas this year (22nd - 27th). Has anyone been for Christmas/or any locals and can offer some advice for some must see Christmassy/Wintery things?
Had a good look at the other spec me threads so looking for more specific things.
Also, how's the weather atm? We're at -13 today. Are you guys having an awful winter also?

I'm assuming it's going to be a bit of a ball-ache to get to the Bone Church? Won't have a car.

Finally, how 'in-depth' is the Staropramen tour? I used to be a brewer, so won't waste my time if it's very basic (ie. Heineken Experience) but if it's a bit more 'hands on' then I'll go.

Cheers.

Bone church should be fine, maybe not on christmas day but there are trains daily (almost hourly between 9 - 5 iirc). Trains are cheap and its only an hour away and kutna hora is a small place, everything is walkable.

I was there last christmas but didnt make an effort to see anything christmas-y since I dont care that much, theres a few old markets in the centre though that look nice.

I'm not *that* fussed about particularly Christmassy things, just thought if there was anything special that is only there around this time (minus the markets, of course - they'll be getting a good checking out) then I ought to fit them in.

Spent last Christmas in Kiev, and the year before in Moscow, which obviously doesn't do Christmas so would be nice to have some sort of festive spirit.

Good to hear the Bone Church is relatively straight forward to get to, really want to see that.

Well you will definately know its christmas in Prague, although the most aethiest country in europe they dress the place up commercially.

I think it's going to be pretty much the same sort of temperatures out there. Take your warm clothes; I froze out there one November :D

Moscow, which obviously doesn't do Christmas
Lol, in Soviet Russia, Christmas does YOU!

The obvious places to vistit are the the castle and Charles bridge. The clock in the old town square. Avoid bars etc in Praha 1 as they can be London Prices. Praha 4 IIRC has some good pubs etc at local prices. Try and speak czech as much as you can when ordering food and drink as some places have tourist prices and local prices.

Avoid the main railstation and park late at night. It's full of thieving gypsies. Other than that the public transport is very good. You can get travel ticket that does you for buses trams, tube and to a small extent train. You can get from The airport to the opposite side of Prague for about a pound.

Also, take ID with you at all times. The police can stop you and arrest/fine you (about £40 IIRC) if you don't have ID.

Planning on going to Prague next year on a "shooting" holiday. Dead cheap too, don't know if that's your type of thing but should be an interesting experience :) The full day course is called the Full Monty :D

Not really interested in shooting, especially not if it's awfully cold outside. It's a cool idea, but not really for me.

Reading about the brewery tour, seemingly it's very basic so that'll be given a wide berth. Sure I'll find lots to do though. The Beer Factory sounds cool, it's a novelty but worth checking out if time allows.
