Prague holiday

Bus is easy to get tho I got a taxi on the way in

Dont take euros take czk, buy transport tickets from local tabac shops. (you buy them then stamp when you want to use).

Go up petrin hill thats a nice walk, into the old town, and up the castle near petrin hill. The ice bar is also kind of cool for 30 mins.

Dont get on any boat trips, theyre massive tourist trips and I was unlucky enough to get in one!

If I went back Id like to take a segway tour

The system is well signed and easy to follow. Use that link I gave a few posts up for maps and times. Where are you staying?

Thanks, all seems reasonably easy and signed after reading a few things. I'll be staying in Old Town in one if the hostels there.

Eat some Medovnik cake. I get the craving for the stuff and I'm considering going to the Czech Republic just to get some.

There is so much to do, I am here for 5 weeks and busy most evenings going to one place or another.

It's a really cheap place - beer and food is also cheap. I really enjoyed the food over there. Wholesome and filling.

The Palace and it's gardens are worth it.
take the funicular railway too to get to the top
Town square and walking across Charles bridge
I enjoyed the view from the Petrin tower too.

To be honest, it's the sort of city that you can just wander around and find things to see and do.

I'd even suggest taking the train to Vienna for a day visit which is what we did.

I wouldn't usually do a free walking tour because obviously they can be of questionable quality and often nag for tips, but I did one a year or so ago run by an american girl holding a red umbrella which was brilliant. I think it would probably have taken me a week to find and see everything we covered in one morning on the tour, and there are so many stories behind all the buildings that it was really worthwhile. I'd definitely check one of those out. You do it all quite quickly so I'd take some time another day to re-visit anything of interest and take pictures etc!

I think I may have had the same girl for our tour of the castle haha! Just got back from Amsterdam and can say I much preferred Prague!

If your into partying and want somewhere very interesting then I would highly recommend going to Cross Club. It is a little bit out of the main city, but trams run to the stop. Club is open nearly all night.

Its not like your typical club in Prague, it alternative and plays techno/psy trance. Great place though.

There are metal sculptures made of car parts everywhere, a small bit psychedelic dance floor, but great outside seating. Big spiral wooden/metal stair case which is sort of open air which runs threw the middle of the club and up with nice benches and seating to relax. There is an indoor bar and a really good restaurant that serves food nearly all night.

Nice vibe, fun people. Not like the rest of Prague clubs. I have been there a few times and always had a good night.

EDIT - All of the good bars in Prague are hidden in the back of restaurants which go into the basement. I have local friends from Prague and they always take me to them, however I couldnt begin to tell you how to get to the good ones. They really are for locals. Like i said, back door rooms in the back of restaurants. Can always get a half litre in them for 1 euro and smoke etc.

Mega thread bump :D Anyone got more info on Prague at all? Mainly nightlife and restaurant recommendations? Thanks!

There's a restaurant right next to the station at Wenceslas Sq. Restaurant Mustek.

It looks like a giant tourist trap (the signage is SO similar to London's awful Aberdeen Steak House chain), but it really isn't. The staff were awesome with the wife and I, and the food is fantastic. Certainly more expensive than you'll find from wandering into the Old Town, but it was a really great meal for us.

Live music, too, when we visited.

And they have a steak challenge! :D

Also check out Cartouche. It's in the Old Town, easy walking distance from Wenceslas Sq. or any central location. Really great ambience... all candle-lit, with years upon years of dripping candle wax hanging off the bottom. It looks medieval, and all the meat is cooked centrally on an open flame, so you can watch it. :)

Head over to Lesser Town (Malá Strana), and there's a pub (I can't remember the damn name, but it's very unassuming -- just sitting on a corner) that does FAB soup in a bread bowl. It's a classic Czech dish, the beer is cheap and the ambience like a tiny country pub. Might make some feel uncomfortable, but I felt right at home in there.

Further up the hill, on Malastranská, is the Three Little Violins. It has a really great reputation, and the food was lovely, but I came to loggerheads with the waiter at the end given his attitude -- he made a very definite point, with eyes wide in shock, as we paid on card that SERVICE IS NOT INCLUDED. I had intended to personally hand him a wad of cash for what had been a very nice evening up until then, but had to resort to telling him that instead.

I'm not sure if that's a cultural thing and I messed up, though.

Oh, and for late night "let's get wrecked", look out for Bar Propaganda. It's run by an American ex-pat, is pretty cheap and the cocktails will get you totalled.

I remember the American guy waving at me saying "bye bye! bye bye!" after I ordered their strongest one. Yeah. Ended up pretty drunk.

It gets BUSSYYYYY in the evenings, though... like, wall to wall.
