Just booked a last minute villa holiday on the Algarve. We're a few minutes walk from the strip at Praia da Oura. Can anyone tell me what I'll find it to be like? Is it chav central? Fine during the day but a meat market at night? Low quality and expensive because it's tourist central? Or is it fine?
It's not an issue really. If it's not family friendly, we'll just go further afield when we eat out.

Supplemental question - our flight arrives at 9am, and we can't check in until 4pm. Any particular suggestions for wasting a few hours on the arrival day?

Can't speak to that particular beach, but Albufeira was one of my least liked places in the Algarve when we stayed there and is less than 10 mins away.

7 hours to kill is quite a lot. If you a renting a car it would be a lot easier to come up with suggestions than if a coach is taking you from Faro to the resort.

Request an early check in, up-front and see if they can do anything.

Yeah, we'll have a car of our own. Already checked, and early check in is not an option apparently.

Albufeira being so close might be a good sign. If that is the main drag for alcoholic teenagers, then Praia da Oura probably isn't!

And googling seems to suggest it as a popular place for families. But doing a streetview tour of the main strip seems to be mainly clubs and slightly low rent looking restaurants!

Just to answer my own question - visiting the strip in the evening was not very pleasant. Loads of hawkers trying to drag you bodily into their bar, and a street full of pillocks.
But there was an Indian restaurant just off the strip which was nice and crazily cheap, and our villa is just far enough away that you can faintly hear the music but it’s not intrusive.
The 7 hours before we could move in were taken up with a very long time getting through passport control, an unsuccessful attempt to buy shoes at a shopping mall, and then a couple of very enjoyable hours sat at a beachside restaurant reading and chatting with some snacks and drinks.

Since you have a car you could head to Olhos de Água, which should take about 10 minutes It has a much more pleasant feel with a lovely beach set in to a cove, a few shops and restaurants plus three choices (various prices depending on how fancy you feel like going) of places to sit, eat and drink overlooking the beech, great for relaxing and people watching too if that is your thing.

The last part of the road access to the beech, shops and restaurants is pedestrianised which makes it a short or long walk from the car depending on where you park but if you can find a space on R. do Parque 4-5, 8200-642 Albufeira, its probably only a couple of minutes easy walk.
