say someone wants a basic pc. main uses would be....

browsing
music
movies
possibly a bit of gaming but not sure what they play atm-if anything

is it really worth building something from scratch or would it be better to just pick up an off the shelf jobby.

basically a friend is looking for a pretty basic pc to do the above as their current one has bitten the dust. they have been looking at the usual suspects, typically off the shelf firms, but i've been trying to coax them into think about putting something together themselves, simply because i feel you get much better bang for buck, better components etc in general when you self build and also a much easier pgrade path later-am i right in this, or does that really only apply when building something that is a bit higer end.

as it is they have seen a couple of desktops in the £350 region that interest them, but at this price point could we do any better going down the road of a self build

i'm not 100% sure what's salvageable from the old pc, probably the dvd drive is about it internally. but they have a mouse/kb and monitor that i think they can keep for the time being, and they also can get a copy of win7...

so basically a long winded spec me :p

As it's low spec you could buy a pre-built, but...you'd get more if you built it for him obviously. But then is it worth squeezing best performance out of the budget if it's just a basic machine..eh.

If they're actually gaming then that'll not be great; the cpu is good for gaming on a budget (saw a great article on it on tomshardware: it outperforms the bulldozer fx4100 by FAR), but the graphics..well...

EDIT:
See, even better than the OCUk intel equivalent which is more expensive:

nice build, and even nicer price.

in truth i'm not sure how much 'gaming' they actually do. i have a feeling when they say they do a bit of gaming, they mean playing farmville and fluff like that!!

the gpu looks a good bet as i think he'd want to outpt movies to his tv, and as it has hdmi out that would save them any messing about with audio.

i'll bear this build in mind. will update on friday evening when i've had a dig through their old pc and see what is actually, definitely re-usable

Ah, for that kinda' thing it'd be fine, and for general browsing/office work/etc it'd be a perfectly acceptable machine.
If they happen to enjoy a nice game of BF3 however..they might be disappointed..

Yeah, if there's any HDD that are re-usable, that'll bring a 6850 or similar graphics into the budget.
