I've double checked and they are both in the correct slots, should I check they are all the way in?

It's not going to hurt, I would however, advise doing it with the machine switched off.
Also I see that people have suggested using afterburner to monitor .1% lows. Here is an example video if you want more advice on how to do that, but you could use a different guide to set it up How To Setup MSI Afterburner & On Screen Display (2021) - YouTube
