I'm thinking of selling a fairly substantially priced item. And an well aware of the potential for trouble

The item is a camera lens and the value will be more towards 1k than 500. Thus.. A considerable amount to just 'lose' due to being scammed
I've never been scammed as a seller but then I've never sold anything beyond 200.

Are there any reliable (ie not anecdotal) sources that might be available as to the fraud rates on eBay?
I think I know all the tricks as a seller but also know the buyer can almost always con you if they so wish.

I will of course try Gumtree first as I'm in no rush
However this is likely to be unsuccessful.

Are there any other low risk options? I think not.

Be prepared to be shafted

I'm having a PayPal rage fest right now, they held £1k of payments for no reason, no dispute no reason - I'm not looking forward to talking to them on the phone tomorrow, **** I hate that company so much

I'm never ever ever selling high value items via PayPal ever again, **** them and everything they stand for :(

It'll get removed, you must accept PP to deal with eBay.

Thats what I just found.
I know so much is sold there scams must be over inflated but not sure if I risk it.
I will need to put some serious thought into this.

I've sold an expensive small item on there last year and was stressed if the buyer would scam me, they got up to 6 months to do it, luckily for me and him he didn't try anything. I would not go through that again.

I spoke to Paypal today as they decided to put my latest ebay payment on hold 'pending'. I provided the tracking number of the parcel immediately as I do online postage with Collectplus. Should get my money in 3 days apparantly because their system saw a 'spike' in payments being made.

Just make sure you post the lens fully insured.

I sold 2 high value items on the bay last year and had no problem avoiding being paid via PayPal. In the listing for both items i made it completely clear that under no circumstances would the item be posted or collected by courier, the buyer was to collect and payment would be cash on collection. As long as that is in your description and you have the collection only box ticked in the delivery options, you are good to go. It is the only way i would sell any high value item on the bay. Of course i had people "try it on" with the usual "How much to deliver to wherever", they got an "i refer you to the listing" answer.
I didn't have any problem selling either item and the eventual buyers collected and paid cash.

I know you said you are going to try Gumtree first but for an item of this value would you not be better off trying a dedicated photography forum?

I have sold plenty of high value items in the past but wouldn't do so anymore.

I wouldn't risk it. You could always put it on as a buy it now and cash on collection only. I've done this before and you'd be surprised how far people are willing to come to collect items, especially such high value ones. You will still have to include PayPal as a payment method on the listing, but just make it clear you will only accept cash.

Sell it as cash on collection only and questions please ask.

You will probably get some daft offers for a sale outside of ebay and some good ones. I sold a bike like this and a guy came that night and collected paying cash (£950) on collection. Pulled it from ebay that same night

Do not sell it out side of the UK and do not sell it to anyone with feedback less than 100

I only use MM or Gumtree to sell expensive items, anything cheap (<£30) can be sold surprisingly quickly on FaceBook. 90% of the stuff I sell now tends to be face to face but arranged via one of the aforementioned methods.

The obvious choice to sell is photography forums (Talk photography). There are others too, but i'd favour these over gumtree and ebay etc.

I've been frustrated by eBay this afternoon. Somebody decides to cancel their bids on my item because they've won an alternative and suddenly the current bid plummets by half.
