Pre-Overclock Check

Its definitely not that hmmm.

What board you got?

I am really off now, so I'll research a bit on it tomorrow and post here.

Motherboard is the basic P5Q.

Maybe doesn't have as many options as the Deluxe, Pro etc.

Thanks for all your help tonight, much appreciated :)

Don't fancy leaving the 8 hour stress test running over night, so I'll give that a blast tomorrow. Fingers crossed :)

Edit: Btw, in the above screenshot, the temperature drop at 42 mins is when I opened up the case to check the North Bridge temperature. I was able to keep my hand on it indefinately. Which I believe is acceptable?

Ok I just worked out from reading a few threads on the net concerning the P5Q. Basically you can't set a specific ratio, its done automatically when you choose which RAM speed you want to run at. It will give you options that aren't always like 533, 667, 800, 1066, so you will have options such as 700Mhz for a 1:1 ratio if the FSB is 350Mhz and you will have several other options which will equate to ratio's like 2:3, 4:5 etc.

Basically if you set your RAM speed to 800Mhz while the FSB is 266Mhz, the ratio will be around 3:5 (FSB:RAM) or something. So basically if you change your FSB, the RAM speed will increase according to that ratio hence why you had the higher RAM speeds I believe.

So the easiest thing to do is simply change the RAM to the 1:1 ratio at the time and leave it at that.

I might be wrong about this, but this is how I have interpreted. Good to see its stable at 1hr. Anyway if you have any problems just change the RAM to 704Mhz (I think I read your using 352Mhz FSB), otherwise if its stable keep it as it is.

I am quite surprised, a semi-coherent post I think lol.

Mornin! :)

Yeah I set the memory to 713Mhz, which is the only option lower than 800Mhz.
I ran the 1hr stability test with that and it passed as seen in the above graph :)

I've just started the 8hr Prime95 Blend test. I've never used Prime95 before.
If temperatures get too high or a problem is detected will it auto quit like OCCT does?

Ok, cancelled Prime95 after 3 and a half hours.

I've no idea what I'm supposed to be doing with it, and Googling Prime95 just brings up hundreds of conflicting methods.

Can someone give me a 1, 2, 3 for stress testing my E6600 with Prime95?

Ah ok, so Prime95 does normally test both cores?

Should there be a note of the fail in the log?

There's no noise and flashy screens with Prime95 as there is with OCCT?

Yeah it will test both cores if you leave the setting on the amount of threads for it to run at 2. It will also say in the log if it fails, can't remember what it is but it basically just stops lol.

Prime95 isn't so flashy, no lights, no noise and no colourful screens :)

Ok, the Prime95 log seems to say there was a fail and that I should check a "stress.txt" file, which I can't locate anywhere...

Anywho, I upped the VCore by another notch and started to run OCCT again for the 1h stress test.

I noticed after a few minutes that the load being put on Core0 was very low, never more than 10%.

Is it possible I could have blown one of the cores?

If your worried your rig is blown all the time i would stop trying to clock and stick to stock.

It's my first overclock and I've already blown up one motherboard, so yes, I'm a bit worried about blowing something else up :p

I unplugged the power to the PC for 10 mins. Core0 seems to be working again now. No idea what may or may not have happend there.

Here's the new 1hr stress results after bumping up the VCore again:

If you really wanna give your clock a good hard stress try intel burn test. it will take 10 mins to run and will give u a good idea then when your happy with your clock then use prime for a good 8-12 hours. It will Stress really hard for a short amount of time.

I took the PC to work today and gave it an 8 hour Prime95 test.
It seemed to go without a problem this time. Both cores at 100% throughout.

I'll take a closer look at the log file tomorrow.
I intend to give the system a good 6 hour MemTest also.

If it all checks out I'll post what settings I ended up with :)
