Not so much a question just a tale you may identify with….
It’s been a while but done plenty of gaming build, tweaks and light OC before. My rig has started to creak and cpu bottlenecking and getting hot (80-90c). I’m stuck on an i7 4790k with RTX 2080 and 32GB ddr3 ram. The build is great but I can’t do anymore without swapping most of the hardware and it runs a lot of stuff well.
Rather than fork out for crazy ddr5/ssd prices I thought I would delid the cpu and crank every last drop outta this bad boy. I hadn’t realised the AIO degraded over time and cpus had more thermal paste under the IHD. Running for eight years you can imagine how that was doing, bone dry!
I decided to replace the AIO then delid the cpu, it was a ballache getting everything out the case as been a while but eventually managed and had a few hacks to install the AIO. De-lidded the cpu and got some Liquid Metal on and glued back together. All went well until I dropped the cpu on the socket and bent some pins and spilled some rogue thermal paste!
Had to order some magnifying glasses from Amazon and strip out the mobo to repair. Managed to straighten the pins out and clean up, re-install every then boot failure. N.B. do not run without cooler installed. Added that on with some kryonaut paste and managed to get booted into bios and windows eventually after much stress.
Took me about two days on/off messing about! CPU now runs 35-40c cooler and added about 20fps to several games. Will start some OC next to see what can be done!!!

This post definitely reads like it was from 2010 - straight into the deep end. Hope it lives for least a few more years!
