pre-pickup day excitement+++

They did used to refer to the engine size as far as I was aware, i'm sure changes in legislation gave arise to increased capacities, but BMW wanted to keep the naming convention the same.

I don't really see that it's 'slow'. Compared to other, faster BMWs maybe but if you compare it to other cars in its class it's got reasonable performance. Certainly a big step up from a Civic.

Congrats :).

fit a cd changer.

Nice car btw, I know the excitement of picking a new car up, I picked up my 3 series BM on saturday

the 318 dash looks fine with a aftermarket plus no cd changer on it will play mp3 discs. I get ~6 cds worth of music on one cd this way ;) not only that but the improvement in sound quality from the stock tape unit. The speakers are pretty good too only let down by the naff stock headunit.

I beg to differ, my E46 dash is complemented by a stock cd player, fitting a aftermarket messes with the lines.

It really depends on the look of the HU you're fitting, you do realise not all aftermarket ones look the same, right ;)

You do realise the stock HU isn't a single DIN unit, infact it doesn't even conform to DIN fascia's full stop. The stock HU contains lines that follow the contour of the dash, and ANY aftermarket HU isn't going to look right, regardless of which brand or model you go for.

Thepharcyde is 100% correct, aftermarket HUs just don't look right in the E46.

nice car but i do have to wonder why anyone would buy a 4 pot BM :p Surely it struggles to shift itself?

Tom.

I would if it has the M10 in it ;)

mrk you really need to do something about the Indicators :p

Nicer wheels and clear repeaters+indicators are on the shopping list for the spring/summer :) right now I am just going to drive and learn it for a while!

In comparison to pretty much anything they're slow, it's similar to 60 as a 1.2 micra iirc :p hell a 1.8 mondeo manages sub 10.

Tom.

Have you driven one? it will certainly do me (considering the civic does me fine around town and B roads here) for a few years before upgrading to a sportier BM :) - Not very logical ya see to just look at figures and go "yep, that's too slow!"

I've driven one, and yes as much as they are a nice place to sit if they have sports leather seats, they are underepowered in my personal opinion.

Also, its perfectly logical to look at figures and say "thats too slow", seeing as they are a simple way to compare car to car. If you are used to driving something obviously quicker, then just looking at the stats will tell you its a non-starter.

Well clearly you don't like it!

I do, I like the comfort and the ride and the quietness inside especially having to drive to work each morning it will be much nicer sitting listening to music without being distracted by your car/other car noises and without having to turn the sound up and distract/annoy other drivers stuck in traffic!

I think it's the right choice after seeing my options the past few weeks. This car will allow me to comfortably drive places and after the 3 years of ownership are up I can get something faster (and obviously more higher up in the insurance scale).

As it stands, right now it would be too costly to own a faster BM and this one is an ideal one as an upgrade from previous cars I have owned plus as a first BMW/rwd car.

Hey, don't jump the gun there. I'm not saying it was a bad choice in car, just PERSONALLY, i'd have gone for a larger engined model, as the 318i is too slow in MY OPINION.

Without knowing how much you paid, its hard to judge if it was a good buy or not, but certainly its a nice car to be stuck in day to day during a commute, and yes its definately a step up (in terms of build quality and presence) from your civic (which was tidy IMO). With a few choice mods (namely the ones I stated in my earlier post) it could look very respectible indeed.

That's ok then :D

The civic got a good scratching and bashing recently by some unknown driver during one night and I just was not up for spending the £350~ on panel repair & respray so it's no longer the tidy motor I once had :(

The upside is it gave me an excuse to actually get something newer and better!

I'll tell you how much I paid tomorrow when the pics are posted too.

Also everyone I have spoken to has said the price is pretty good especially for what you get (not just the cars history but from the dealer too)
