Pre-production sample of Intel's first six-core Core i7 CPU

I'm all for buying the latest stuff but this is just totally un-necessary for 99% of the consumer market, most games can't even utilise quad core properly still.

I won't be buying one, just an excuse to morgage the little un off!

You'd have thought since the days of c2d coders would have found a way of programs utilising how ever many cores are available. Lets face it there not going to stop at 6...

yes but consoles have more cores than 2 (think ps3 has 7) so that means a lot of games would use (as most are console ports)

360 has a tri-core CPU and similar hardware to PC's so most PC ports are based on this. GTA IV for example supports 3 threads.
The PS3 has an 8 Cell CPU, not quite the the same as an eight core CPU. From my understanding of this its harder to code for the cell processor hence most ports coming from the 360.

The next generation of console needs to be released before the standard of gaming improves as game developers are designing games based on old tech (current consoles)

It's the same argument we all had when the Athlons were king and people reluctantly gave up single core to move to dual - "this is better for games - that's better for windows..."

Whether you choose to buy into the bleeding edge, or hang back and wait for the software to catch up, we should always be grateful that there are early adopters - without them hardware would stagnate and we'd all be happy with our single core and 512mb of RAM

The Cell chip found on the PS3 isn't a proper 8 core (in fact it's 7 as one cell is always disabled) CPU, it has one general purpose core similar to IBM's classic power PC CPU and 8 cells which aren't for general purpose.

I would expect this Golftown 6 core CPU to cost somewhere in the region of £1000, to be honest given the price tag and lack of consumer software that can use 6 cores it's launch is almost a non event and to be honest I'm looking forward more to 32nm quad core chips more then this.

There is probably a lot of demand on the server side. After that there is probably relatively little cost to intel in porting it to the desktop.

Besides you know this is just the thin edge of the wedge. You know in 3 years you will all have six cores and a be debating the 8 and 12 core that will be imminent

I don't understand why the 6 core Intel chip is expected to cost £1000, when the 6 core AMD Instanbul @2.2Ghz has a pre-order price of £350?

woah
i know this is off topic but AMD have their hexacores on preorder?!?!?!
when did this happen
(my last post as a thug :) )

I remember reading they there supposed to be released this year. An i7 will probably beat them (even though they have 6 coress) though, really they're aimed at the server end of the market (great for VM setups). There's a youtube video of someone with a 4 way AMD 6 core setup, why on earth you'd want 24 cores in one box though I don't know:p
