Im only 16 at the moment but i have been getting driving lessons of my dad,my grampa and im starting to think about my own car when im 17.
My dad says i can get/share his car when i pass my test but the insurence for it is gonna be about £2500/£3000 for the first year nomatter what car i get :(, my dads car is a 2002 hyundia coupe 2.0L i like it a lot but i have a soft spot for american muscle and v8's :P and i was wondering if anyone can spec me a v8 or american car, doesnt matter how old it is body work ect... i will work on it myself but aslong it it has that sweet sounding v8 with a bit of power:D

I say in about a year ill have a 3-4k budget for the car and 2-3k budget for the insurance, mot, roadtax parts.

Thanks,i just want to know if it can be done in that budget :D

I dread to think what the insurance would be, try a few on line quotes.

Good luck anyway, its good to have a goal.

Hmm i need a car specd first before i can go get some quotes:P, my goal in life is to own a mustang GT500 Eleanor :P but i have to start of at he bottom.

There is absolutely no way you are having a V8 - get used to this idea now, and be realistic. You'll be driving a Fiesta 1.25 like everyone else, most probably.

Sadly this is the case, but still do a few quotes to get the notion out of your mind for a few years yet :)

becuase your going to be just 17 , and of course your FIRST car, i recomend a dirt cheap car for your 1st year, in my first year (although i was 22 i think when i started) i had my first accident in my first year, right at the end of my 1st year :(

save your penies

I passed my test in March, I'm 18 and for me to run a Fiat Brava 1.6 is costing a hell of a lot. I mean it's a 1.6 and the insurance is £1600, I dread to think what it would be on a V8, in fact I am scared of looking.

Also buy something that's mechanically sound. I paid £850 for my Fiat, and since then, I've had to buy a new exhaust from the Cat back which is one big piece, which was £200, I'm going on holiday at the end of August so want the MOT and service done early and that's another £200 + if they find anything wrong on the MOT. Oh and the cambelt is getting changed, another £260. So in 6 months that's ~£660, could have just bought a better car... :(

I know its a Fiat so it's unreliable, and I know I'm mad for spending £660 on a car I paid £850 for, but I had to learn somehow!!

No offence, but i lol'd hard when I saw this. There is no way in hell you are going to get insured on something like that.

Clio, Punto, Fiesta as a first car, get something crap too so that if you have a knock it doesn't matter. Just have some patience, build up your no claims and then you can get something decent when you are 21+.

That, or move to America.

Like everyone else :p ?

Does the UK have tax free >25 yr old cars and cheapo oldtimer insurance ?
LPG'd <1985 yank tank ? It'll cost a fortune to keep running ( reliability wise ) I think though ?
If your oldtimers aren't tax free though and insurance isn't cheaper on them, I'd forget it for a while.

Mondeo comes closer to your preference of American v8 than fiesta/clio/punto. 2.5k should buy you a nice 2 liter with ghia trim if I'm correct in the UK, keep the rest for insurance, buffer for unexpected bills and save for later.
Ideally, if your dad doesn't drive too much, you're better off driving his while continuing to save for something nice later...

^ He's right...for once. ;)

I'm paying £1200 for my 06' 1.25 Fiesta and live in a nice area, car is parked on a private drive etc V8 is a no-go! Unless you have access to some of these suspect 'fleet insurance' policies. Which for a £3-4k car wouldn't make sense.

Either buy a V8 and be prepared to have it in your garage for a number of years and you can work on it and admire it. Or, be realistic and get a normal car.

I would absolutely love a SEC 500. I can buy one. I can't insure one for another five years probably.

You do NOT live in the United Kingdom.

You do though and you drove a xantia, which is still miles better than a clio/punto/fiesta in my eyes, at least it's comfy and you can go on a holiday in it without keeping your luggage on your knees or 3 people in the back without having to sit on each others lap.

but i have to start of at he bottom.

Yeah, the bottom is a bit further down from anything with a V8...

Sorry to kill the early dream. Just get a normal first car and a few years under your belt and then upgrade to American muscle.

Really!!!:eek: I've just run a quote for a Fiat Seicento 1.1 at my house as if I'm 17 with no NCD and passed test last week £3179 third party only and £3526 tpo on a 800cc Daewoo Matiz, How on earth does anyone start out driving????

Save a lot of money. I saved up £4.5k over two years working part time and blew all of it plus a little more of my rents money on a car and insurance.

The best possible company I found for insuring classics at a young age was "Delta" who underwrote the quotes I got through Lancaster Direct. When I was looking for my first car I was getting quote of around £2,000 for some rather interesting old British sheds, most memorially a Triumph Dolomite Spirit, Rover SD1 V8 and Jaguar XJS 5.3 V12! Given the fact that I live in an absolute dump and still pay a bit more than that figure for my second year's driving with a year's NCB, I thought they were utterly brilliant quotes. Unfortunately I didn't have the nerve (or the money) to run a proper classic, seriously regret it sometimes :(.

Not sure what they'd be like insuring something Yank though. If you are going to go American, try and think outside the box. I'm sure a Mustang/Camaro/Firebird isn't going to happen no matter how understanding the insurance company.

The fact is that you do not have to settle for something dull just because you're young. You might not end up with GT500 right now, but there are still plenty of other interesting old cars out there despite what some may tell you, can be insured for a fair bit less than a 1.25 Fiesta Zetec ;).

Actually I would not think insurance would be impossible at 17 on a v8, classic policy on limited mileage. Expensive, most likely - MUCH more than a modern car? Maybe not. Check out specialists.

Are you going to be able to afford to RUN a v8 muscle car? No.

the best thing to do is get quotes from admiral, bell and elephant

add your parents on as named drivers.

some people find a comp policy with a high excess to be cheaper than a TPFT
