Looking to upgrade my ancient Samsung 32" UW which is still working great to something more current. The main use of the monitor will be for Visual Studio Development, so it needs to have clear text. Secondary use will be for gaming. I am running a 3080 and would love a G-Sync version but reading the forum there seems to be quite a few people suffering from noisy fans. I don't like coil whine and any little high pitched fans would drive me nuts.

I have been looking on the forum and obviously everyone seems to be going for the Alienware 32" OLED. Its a lovely price but I'm put of with potentially blurry text, noisy fans and potential screen burn from all the static text that I would be using. I do have two LG OLED 55" CX and 42" C2 which are TV's. I know the 42" might be a good fit but it's a tad too big.

Roughly looking to spend around 1K mark.

Top of the list looks like the Predator X38 and the other is the Samsung G70NC which is waiting on reviews.

Is the X38 worth looking at? Anybody got one? I'm assuming its got a fan for the G-Sync, is it noisy?

There doesn't look like there are too many options that are half decent.

Any thoughts?

I have the X38s. Got it early Jan when it dropped significantly in price. I previously had an Alienware 38" UW which uses the same panel, but had a stuck pixel so went back. I tried a Samsung Neo G7 for a few weeks too.

I'd say out of those 3 the Predator is the best overall. Like you, I mainly do my day job on this screen, so I was worried about the lower resolution and text fringing issues with the current UW OLED's. The extra real estate you get with 38" UW is great, without it feeling too big. For work, it's perfect IMO.I found the Alienware was very similar(as you'd expect) but the X38s has slightly better HDR performance and a 175hz refresh rate vs the Alienware 144hz. When you compare OLED vs X38s for HDR gaming and movies then of course OLED is far superior but for me the pro's outwrigh the cons for what I need it to do. Also, the X38s has built in speakers, which aren't great for gaming but are more than sufficient for most other tasks. It meant I could ditch my desktop speakers.

The Neo G7 had the best HDR performance, but I missed the UW aspect ratio and the curve was too extreme when mainly working in Office apps so that also went back.

Both Alienware and X38s have GSync Ultimate modules with fans, but I can't say i've heard them once and i'm very sensitive to coil whine.

Sadly, like you say, there isn't a perfect monitor out there (yet) for HDR gaming and productivity combined.

Is a 4k panel a must for you? If not have you taken any consideration into the Samsung G55T? Some really good deals to be had on it currently even around £400 for a 34" 165Hz 1ms 1440p UW.

Currently running 3440x1440 so the higher resolution of the 38 for work would be a bonus. Minimum would be to stick with the current resolution which I don’t mind. The main issue I’m seeing is the little fans for g-sync. I’m assuming AMD FreeSync doesn’t have these fans but I loose the low frame sync which should not be a problem with the 3080. I’ll have a look at the G55T, cheers
