hi all,s i am lining up a replacement for my current motor and have been interested in the honda prelude for sometime.

i am looking at 4th or 5th gen with the 2.2 Vtec lump.

can anyone advise on how tunable this motor is? is there good aftermarket support in trms of header, exhaust, tb, ecu etc. Also how reliable the cars are in general. how they would compare with a type R in terms of handling, sprint pace etc?

do they have good suspension setups? i believe the civic has double wishbones etc.

ideally im after a motegi version if i can find one. suggestions are welcome though.

The H22 engine is well tuned from the factory. Basic mods such as a good intake filter, exhaust and de-cat will see you about a 10-15bhp increase. Higher gains are more expensive though! ;)

A friend took his stock Prelude on track a couple of weekends ago, and it was his first time on track, and he was keeping up just as well as standard Integra Type R's! ;) Every time there's a Honda trackday, the Teg boys in their £5-7k "track car for the road" cars get shown up in £1500 "lardy, barge" Preludes ;)

For lots of great information, take a look on PreludeUK, and/or feel free to add me to MSN (details in Trust)

I have a 4th gen JDM facelift.

They are decent reliable cars as long as they have been serviced and taken care of. Especially the oil changes.

Engine wise, again referring to 4th gens, JDM is ~197bhp, UKDM is ~185bhp. Modification wise, not sure on the finer details but ECU chipping is common to remove limiters and lower VTEC engagement and some other stuff.... (can you tell I've only just started looking into it :p )

Lots of aftermarket parts available, but sometimes need to be looking further afield for specific items.

Look at PreludeUK for more information.

I'm sure Confused and the other Lude owners will be around to give some much better info... :D

edit: beat me to it ;)

Hi there

Get a car with full service history and one that is in good working order and they will generally run without failure. They are very well built and reliable cars. :)

I had one which when I got it had 60k on the clock, sold it with 110k on the clock and during that time only changed the oil and tyres, it was a faultless car. The new owner also had no issues with it either.

Tuning wise, well UK one kicks out 185BHP which is what I had. Wheras the JDM has 195ish BHP when run on V-Power/100RON.

Tuning wise, best mods are AEM 2 CAI, DE-CAT and exhaust. That should see 10-15BHP boost. Also reducing the cars weight helps them move along quite a bit quicker, lighter wheels, suspension parts etc.

The UK version has most of the toys and weighs circa 1300kg.

The JDM there the spec varies, but there is a lightweight model on the 4th Gen which is circa 1240kg.

The best Prelude is the 5th Gen Type S, fantastic cars and very rare. Still 220BHP, good handling so one worth looking for. :)

yeah definitely best car ive ever owned too.
can't really add anything to above post but the BB4 with LSD and no 4WS is best version to have.

hmm BB4?

do the 5th gen come with 197bhp as standard? i actually really like the front end and shape of the 5th gen, but it could prove to be just outside my price cap.

Early UK 5th gens came with the same 185bhp H22A2 engine as the 4th gen UKDM cars. Later 5th gens (post 98) came with the "red top" 197bhp engine.

Sound advice there, without it he may have bought one that didnt work

Hi there

So the most constructive post you could make to this thread was one nit picking at my post?

Stop been a dirty spammer and troll. :p

They'll be about on par with a civic type r in the handling stakes, but a much more fun to drive engine :D

Even better if you get one with a limited slip diff but I don't think any of the 5th gens came with on - only certain 4th gens.
