Premier League All Star Game

We don't have to agree with his ideas but I don't get this rush to rubbish anybody that suggests something new or different. The PL is a great League but it doesn't mean that there aren't things that we can do differently or better and there's certainly no harm actually discussing new ideas.

Take this all star game thing, obviously there's calendar issues here but is it really such a wild and terrible idea? If it could generate the sort of money that he says they made in the MLB then it makes absolute sense to look at it. For all the ridicule I bet there would be far more interest in an all star game than there is in the community shield and if it makes an extra £100m then that's more money for charity and the pyramid.

While I initially thought it was a crazy suggestion, if it can generate that sort of money to fund the pyramid, that's no bad thing.

Seems to have been met with universal scorn though.

You may have a point re. new ideas, but the notion that they will use the money generated to spread amongst the 'pyramid' seems naive. He wants an all star game because it adds a new revenue stream to his shiny new purchase.

Am I getting the basic gist of this idea right?

Fans, media and players pick squads - one from the northern EPL teams (say Manchester and north), the other from southern EPL teams (say south of Manchester). Then the two new squads play each other at a large venue?

If so, it seems like fun. I'm in.

I'm sure that's what he wants but why can't we use this as a starting point to create something that can do both? No match/competition could go ahead without the FA's say, so an agreement that keeps them happy would have to be reached.

As I initially said, why can't we look at these things and try to find something that works rather than just rubbish anybody that dares to suggest something new or different?

Great idea but with an already massively packed football schedule - never going to work.

American sports like Baseball have 4 months off every year so have space in the calendar to do it. No chance that's happening despite it being a fun idea.

The calendar is the biggest obstacle, although would replacing the community shield with this be such a terrible thing?

They said players play too many games already.

How will this help?

Cancel the international europe league thing for starters. Ditch the league Cup.

Delete the europa conference league.

That would help with less co2 emissions and give some players a rest.

Nothing wrong the idea in principle. Just, as most above already said, the already packed calendar makes it difficult to see it becoming a reality.

Imagine this had been a thing a few years back, Keane, Halland, Shearer all in the same team could have been fun. :p

If they finally dump the Carabo cup then sure. If we're not going to cancel these old, dumb, worthless competitions then adding more to the calendar is ridiculous.

Aren't the All Star games traditional in the mid season break and not at the beginning of the season (so cancels out replacing the Charity Shield as the traditional season opener but I only watch the NHL so not sure if other American sports have different days) but if you ignore that, say we had it this season as the opener and Mane had been voted as a player (votes are usually pooled months in advance) but has joined Bayern surely they wouldn't release him to play in an English All Star game.

He also mentions play-offs for relegation which is another joke as if you aren't good enough over 38 games then you shouldn't be able to save your skin in the playoff, while we're at it why don't we cancel one off finals as well and make the FA cup and Carabo cup a best of seven series, that way more people will get to see the final as not everyone would go to all the possible 7 games.

In the lead up to the all Star games they traditionally have the dunk competition. I guess for football they can have the dive competition to see who's going to be the most convincing in the season.......5 times dive champion raheem sterling!

I like the German system for relegation/promotion where there are two automatic places and then the other place the team in the division above play the team in the division below to decide whether there is one more promotion/relegation
