I have to give a presentation tommorow at an interview, this is the first time i have ha to do one, and to be honest its the first time that im going for a job thats not a entry level job. Was feeling a lack of confidence to start with but if they offered me an interview they must have seen something they like and think i can do it.
I have to do a five minute presentation, i think i have got most of the material i need, not doina a power point as i think other people will do it and i can do it better with out.
Its going to be infront or no more than 6 people. How do i go about starting it, i know it sounds silly but whats the first thing i say? once i get into it i know i will be more or less ok, its just the begining and ending it.
Also any other advice would be good
thanks in advance

Have you found out what presentation facilities they have? If they have it set up for Powerpoint, then they probably expect one done in PP, have they got an OHP, Whiteboard etc?

its about websites i have made, how they fit the accessibiliy and disability laws. then what i think makes a good school website.

Was thinking about showing them 3 sites, going through them one by one explaning who there for, a little bit about them then showing them how they fit the accessability laws. and show them a website that checks them to.
As for wha makes a good school one, i was just going to talk about what i think it should include, depending on who its aimed at. and maybe show some good examples.

Yeah when i phoned up they have an interactive whiteboard and projector. They'll have office and that but i think that pp is not needed for this presentation.

The job is a web manager, from the looks of it its just updating and managing schools websites, and develeping them if they havnt got one.

Go with whatever you feel suits the situation but I have to say, especially with something like a website, a powerpoint presentation is pretty much standard.

Dont try and do something different just to be different, there's usually a reason why everyone else does it.

How are you going to present this effectively not using powerpoint?

have the website up on the screen while i talk about it, and show them on the live website as im going through it. then move on to the next one. if i did a pp then i think most of the time would be spent with the webpage on the screen anyways.

Well, you'd take screenshots on various aspects of the website, with arrows or lines and labels pointing at different areas to illustrate your points as you go through them.

Another aspect is if there are any problems with the internet connection, or that particular site is down or anything like that, you don't want your entire presentation to be messed up.

Yes, but it would be a lot smoother than you loading up the website by going to the URL or opening a file with it in. You'll really kill the flow of the presentation otherwise.

Use powerpoint to aid your presentation....

On a more basic level.

Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them. Standard presentation technique for business presentations.

As for your plan of showing them the websites, are you sure that the machine they have plugged in to the projector will have internet access? I know our presentation rooms don't.

Good morning/afternoon. My name is ....... and today I will be talking about .......

It should come to a natural end, but if not, something along the lines of " That concludes my presentation on ..... If you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer them".

Don't worry about beginnings/endings too much, concentrate on the content. Presentations are nearly always designed to test your communication and (funnily enough) presentation skills. Speak clearly, sound enthusiastic about your subject matter, and DO NOT READ FROM PRE-PREPARED MATERIAL. I can't emphasise this enough. Use notes/bullet points/whatever to guide you, but there is nothing more annoying as an assessor than someone reading out a pre-prepared script verbatim. Try to keep a natural style with good eye contact.

Good luck :)

yeah i checked they have internet access. I really didnt want to do a pp but if you think it looks more profesional then i will do.

I'd definitely use powerpoint. Have a screenshot of the website with notes down the side.

you can include things such as site maps using powerpoint diagrams.

Start your presentation by talking about yourself, your history and then go on to say what you will be able to do for the company.

Such things as how you can improve a current system would be a good thing to talk about.

Any notes on the powerpoint should be short, and expanded upon verbally. Any questions should be answered directly and thoroughly - don't forget an interview is as much about your technical ability as it is your personality.

Also make sure you make eye contact with everyone in the room at some point as this will keep their attention.
