Presentation

What you can do is set up the auto slide changing thing to about 1/10th a second for a few slides and drop a few subliminals in there ;). Whole pages with a big word and/or picture on each. Works like a charm, I probably can't post what we put in one at school but suffice to say half the class got it and luckily the teacher didn't :D

I will select you to do my next IP Futures presentaion. Give the boy a brown star. ;)

If you know your subject, are a good orator and can engage your audience then 1 slide should suffice as a backdrop, assuming you don’t need to illustrate something. The slides should never be a guide, merely a backdrop to what you are discussing. YOU should be the focus, not the slides and trying to define the ‘amount’ of slides is pointless when we know nothing about your delivery, content, messages or audience.

I recently did a presentation for my 3d and final year. I got a 1st and this is what i did.

Just make sure your presentation has a introduction(20%) a middle(60%) and an conclusion(20%)

Introduction - 1 slide 20% of the time ish.
You should day what your going to talk about.

Middle - any number of slides.
Keep them brief, just half a sentance or so on each point, include diagrams to refer to.

Conclusion - 1 slide 20% again
Just conclude what you have talked about.

Talk slowly and clearly. Plan your presentation so that you can link from one topic to the next seemlessly.

Keep slies brief, i just used bullet points for the main key terms and topics and expanded on them while talking.

Keep eye contact, dont read a script and refer to diagams if possible as it keeps your audience intertested.

Be prepared to answer questions, so know your subject.

Aviod making your slides complex with silly effects/sounds and backgrounds.

Lastly but most important point is, check the module documentation for the assesment critera and make sure you forfill every one and theres no reason you will get a 1st. This is the major downfall of most students is that they completely miss the ball because they dont look at the assesment critera. You'll probally find that the critera is mostly centred around the presentation its self, rather than the content. If that is the case then its best to perfect the presentation over the content.

EDIT:
The presentation i did had an allocated time of 20mins. My power point consisted of 11 slides, 2 diagrams, average of 3 points per slide, and an average of less than 30 words per slide. It took around 12 mins to do.

For the sake of Christ don't put loads on the slides and then just read it off. You may as well just print out a sheet of notes for them and go for a sandwich if you're doing that.

Speak slowly and clearly and be aware that generally people tend to gabble when presenting. If you need a second to thing about something then take it, the time isn't important and it'll only reflect well on you for doing so. Keep your slides simple and contrasting. Plain blue backgrounds with yellow/white text or a white background with black text work well in terms of contrast. It's important to consider contrast as the differences between reflected light (a projector) and reflected light (a computer screen) are huge. If you're really going to town, then you should technically consider colour blindness too and only use colours that will be contrasting to all of your audience.

As a personal rule of thumb, I know over a presentation I average around 1min a slide, but it varies hugely depending on the slide and what it's on. I generally try to talk it over once or twice before I do it, just to get it clear in my head but the last one I did I just winged (though admittedly I knew the topic backwards). Basically, do whatever suits you.

? read them out and time yourself

i had like 5 slides in 10minutes, but each slide had 1 line and a big picture!!!

there is absolutely no point to read from the slides, that will get you low marks, ideally have a sentence and a few words then go on to explain, looking at the board for a second just to see the next topic...

+ if everything is on the slides, no1 will listen to you, except the tutor etc

OP, I'm sure that you know that your question was incredibly stupid. But there is some good advice on presentation style and structure here that I suggest you follow.

There has been some good advice on here. I have just started a job where I will be teaching airlines and the military about flight simulators and thus will be doing/giving a presentation/training course for around 20 days. And here are some of my tips (haven't been doing this long but have learnt some good stuff so far).

1. Try and maintain eye contact with the audiance but make sure you try and switch to everyone in the audiance so they feel you are taking notice of them etc.

2. Don't sway on the spot or fiddle with anything. (I did this on my first test presentation and didn't even realise it).

3. Don't look at the projector, use the computer screen on the desk so that you don't break eye contact for long and you also don't look like you can't remember what you are talking about. Only look at the projector if you need to point something out etc.

4. If you need to explain something and their are whiteboards there then remember to draw things a lot bigger than you would normally.

5. You should only do short and to the point bullets on your slides and then talk more about these points.

6. Another good tip is if you have multiple bullet points on the slide, have one fly in talk about the point then as another point slides in make the previous point fade out so it is obvious which point you are talking about.

Think thats it so far as I am still learning lots of tips and tricks.

Negative. IMO animations are sent straight from hell itself. If your slides are clear enough (i.e. not too much text) and you're covering things in the right order, there isn't any need for this. That follows for transitions too ...

I would bet money that the 1 line you added was completely superfluous.

Don't bother with bullet points, it should be for pictures or diagrams only.

Thats pretty bad advice if he is presenting something particuarly complicated. Viewers are only human and need some basic guidance to remind them of what is going on if their attention lapses.

Also, anything moving is a sin.

I disagree. You main focus should be on how you present your ideas and at what level your audience are at. Articulate you dialogue so that it flows well and is easily understandable. If you are trying to educate a novice audience about a complex topic, you either need to break it down into small chunks which won't need reiterating by a slide or use another medium. If you need to structure ideas for people that isn't a picture or diagram, use a handout, a presentation isn't the best method to provide that information.

Also, anything moving is a sin

Again, I disagree, if you structure your presentation for a demo or video, that's fine as long as the audience's attention should only be on what is being displayed, not said by the presenter.

Think I missed it out from my previous rather excellent advice but when doing a presentation you may wish to add a full slide of yourself doing something embarrasing (perhaps dressed as a woman?), which you will display briefly and follow up with the comment "whoa, how did that get in there?". Good luck ;):D
