A new law in Afghanistan that the UN has said will make it legal for men to rape their wives, prevent women from working, going to school or even visiting a doctor without their husband’s approval.

Opponents say of the law that it is, "worse than during the Taliban". It is believed that President Karzai signed the law to ensure the approval of Shia swing voters. The law was rushed through Parliament with very little debate.

Female MP Karokhail said, "They wanted to pass it almost like a secret negotiation. There were lots of things that we wanted to change, but they didn't want to discuss it because Karzai wants to please the Shia before the election."

Nice to see they're slowly getting better.

Well, in fairness they are only 100 - 150 years behind our views. Women in Vicrorian times in this country didn't have such a great time.

this isn't the prevailing view of the country, and its truly retarded to suggest as much.

THink of it this way, a politician's staff tell him, pass this law and this small group will all vote for you and will be enough for a victory, don't pass this law and the vote could go either way.

Yup, America, the UK, we're above passing turd laws to appease minority groups just to get votes. It was to get that small minority of extreme muslims essentially, to vote for them, it doesn't mean the whole country wanted or thinks its right, just that group they wanted to vote.

The UK hasn't given any leeway to more extreme muslims here have they, oh no, we're miles better than they are.

If you look at it subjectively, they political moves are closer to what we do here and now, than making them appear to be a backward country.

Think of all the Sharia law crap thats been talked about in the UK for the past few years thats being considered to appease certain groups in the UK to get their votes, is that any different at all, no.

They have small minded sexist and racist people in their country, passing a law to get their vote is hardly indictative that the whole country wants it. Likewise we have small minded sexist and racist people here, criminals, violent people, rapists with all kinds of civil rights aswell, you can pretend we are far superior all you want, doesn't make it true.

Infact what do you think is the official numbers in the UK of men raping their wives as opposed to the numbers for raping unknown women and those they aren't married to, as opposed to the numbers of women who falsely accuse things like rape and abuse just to get better settlements in divorce proceedings and get child custody, infact its become a huge problem that its so easy to accuse people in the uk and the stigma attached to the accused even without a guilty verdict. Not saying the law to make rape fine is good in anyway, but theres the complete opposite side aswell which we suffer from here in probably a larger number and its truly vile people who would falsely accuse people in those situations.

Just watch the crap labour will get up to for this election, promises and laws for every single type of minority possible in an attempt to get their vote, they'll be so damn desperate they might be making an embarassing amount of horrible promises this time around.

Didnt it used to be legal in this country until 1980something as well?

Yea it was legal until a short time ago, cant remember the exact case though that caused the law to change

It does however mean that the rest of the country will have to live under those conditions. I'm sure our politicans do make quite a few moves just for the headlines but if a law destroying the human rights of half the population was passed.. there would be rioting on the streets.

Whilst he may pass such a law to curry favour with the more extreme sections, such a thing would be impossible in a society which did not at least partly condone it. There's no point passing a law to win over a few extremists if it means the rest of the country would be voting against you.

Now why does that remind me of Labour....

The House of Lords abolished the charge against Marital rape as late as 1992!

We are perhaps not as far in front as you might think....

There are laws for every thing in this country, but you wouldnt find a court that would up hold that law.
