Surely these chips must be good? Im looking at the Presler dual core 2.8ghz, im assuming this is two 2.8ghz cores, 5.6ghz theoretically. Im hearing all the rage about the X2's but the Preslers have 4mb of cache, 2mb per core and 65nm process and some have 1066fsb, wtf? surely these must be FAST.

Intel Pentium 4 920 Dual Core "LGA775 Presler" 2.8GHz (800FSB) - Retail (CP-111-IN) Price: £154.95 (£182.07 Including VAT at 17.5%)

thats for a dual core 2.8, 800fsb, 2x2mb cache, 65nm AND people are raging about the X2's

the chepeast X2 is

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3800BVBOX) (CP-134-AM) Price: £179.95 (£211.44 Including VAT at 17.5%)

So the pentium4 is 30 quid cheaper, double the cache, 65nm process compared to X2 90nm the only thing i can think of the X2 being faster is that its dual core 3.8 compared to intels dual core 2.8 am i correct on this?

Yeah suppose it does but not by a huge amount im just thinking how fast these must be on general desktop work

Define "hot" though? Normally people only care about temperature if it is affecting their ability to OC. People have been OCing them like mad on air cooling so clearly whichever temperature they are running at is not bothering the chip :)

hot? 60-70c in a pretty average environment i guess. Heat doesnt bother everybody, and it may not bother the chip. however it does make a difference if your running with less than ideal case cooling - a HTPC for example. Heat because very important then.

There are other things to concider as well, like is the stock heatsink good enough? is it too loud? will you need an aftermarket jobbie? ect £30 cheaper may not be £30 cheaper if you need a new heatsink to go with it:)

I think people remeber the early socket 478 prescotts for heat and peformance. and how the northwood would out perform its newer counterpart upto 3.6 3.8g. These new 65nm cores have had many improvements over the early presshot cpu's. It was always said that presscott's would get faster and with that would come even better performance. over 4 gig these preslers fly and you can get that on default voltage aswell. 4 meg of onboard to!

people are getting 4.2 and above on air easily, and yeap like any other CPU after market coolers will increase your overclock and reduce temps! thats why people make them. and why people buy them.

I really like this CPU, it runs everything and windows just flys and is ever so smooth.

Come on give one a go!

You can't compare the P-D 920 @ 2.8Ghz and say that it is cheaper than the X2 3800+. The X2 3800+ is effectively two 3200+ CPUs so it should be compared to a faster P-D

The P-D 900 is a huge improvement over the P-D 800 (which was an embarrassment TBH). It keeps up with the equivalent X2 (eg X2 3800+ vs P-D 3.2) but it doesn't quite beat it

The main thing going for the P-D 900 is that it's a stonking overclocker

I was not impressed with my PD 830 3hgz but that only had 2mb cache.

well i wasnt impressed by the 8 serie's either, but the preslers have undergone a few more changes along with an extra 2mb of cache.

they have also changed the pipe stages, with some other modifications aswell. i think it a bit unfair to compare a 8 series smithfield CPU as the presler is actualy 2 seperate CPU's not conbined like smithfield.

Hmm, maybe AMD is loosing its gaming crown ?.
I think its good that the 2 great houses war over little bits of silicon, it can only lead to faster and cheaper chips for all.
