Prevent Nvidia Driver updates

I dunno why people seem to think that option prevents automatic driver updates ;p it hasn't done so for months and the description if you read it carefully now lists it as an option for whether you get additional software and icons when Windows does automatically force a driver on you along with the driver or whether it just forces the core driver.

OMG, thank you!

I have been trying in vain to get my system to work properly since Christmas and now realise it's because since the anniversary update the ****s at Microsoft are automatically installing incompatible drivers on my system

You can switch it off. Like I said earlier, disable the service :)
Problem is most of the ways of disabling it require some type of work around or other (unless you have a version that is intended to use group policies) and can have other side effects and/or result in your system being less secure than it could be due to either not getting or being tedious to stay on top of things like critical security updates.

MS seriously needs to stop being stubborn about it and put in proper, granular, manual management as well as the automated system so people can take proper control in the not uncommon instances where it is needed and/or aren't exposed to other security or compatibility issues through having to take matters into their own hands via unsupported methods.

Few updates are actually needed. Most of them is Microsoft screwing around with their telemetry rubbish and their spyware apps. Actual security patches are only every now and then.

You can stop and disable the services in services.msc on any windows machine.

Well, typically several per month.

This months security updates have been delayed due to their complexity. It is expected that it will include a fix for the zero-day SMB exploit which affects all Windows versions.

Disabling the service completely really is using a sledgehammer. Just use the registry settings to disable driver updates.

Well I've just done a reinstall of my PC.

The way I installed the latest Nvidia drivers this time was downloaded them first, unplug my Ethernet cable, uninstall the drivers, reboot etc... delete folders etc ect then whilst still offline, reinstalled the latest.

It worked!

Despite having "Turn off Windows Update device driver search" blocked by group policy, Windows has updated both my GPU and sound drivers this morning. I think the time has come to disable the update service, but that will then mean even critical updates will need to be applied manually. How can anyone at MS think this is a good idea?

if you are so unhappy why don't you provide some feedback to them or even start a user voice issue? Instead of coming here with ... "omg MS ... how can you bla bla", do something about it in a way they can actually get your feedback? Seriously, MS is one of the very few companies that will actually listen, yes it might take a while but if enough people say the same thing, they will listen.

I was not intending to come across as "omg how could you?", and I've made this post in addition to continually providing feedback via the built in app and via the Insider program. I apologise that this seems to have ground your gears a little, but I added the post in good faith as I've seen a few people claim on these forums that these updates are not happening.

What I find frustrating is that despite the feedback from many quarters, MS even appear to be locking down all the workarounds that were previously available to us. Stranger still, my previous Win 10 installs that were upgraded to 1607 didn't behave this way, it's only since I've clean installed on 1607 that none of the workarounds appear functional.

You obviously haven't spent much time on the feedback hub :p 3 out of the top 10 complaints for like 2 years are about automatic updates and the only time they've reacted to it is when some big name streamers with a bit of clout kicked off about specific aspects of it that was rebooting them mid stream.

I had a few issues of my own there, got one sorted so far, it took a while though :)

Seems strange what they do pickup on and not - my brother found quite a major though obscure bug with the language toolbar with security implications and it took them more than 9 months to deal with it.

I had a complaint about start menu functionality that got sorted in like a week while my feedback about serious automatic update issues specific to tablets has been ignored for over a year (other than adding new shutdown options which don't really fix it).

I have a feeling the automatic updates was more of a strategic decision, but it would clarify things if MS made a definitive statement that they're not willing to change it or are indeed investigating options. I had no major issue with the former as it was previously possible to work around those issues if so desired.

I turned on my PC yesterday too and windows update begaing to check for updates and then it automatically downloaded the 376.53 driver and installed it - I had no option to cancel.
I thought oh well I'll just uninstall it and keep the old 375.70 driver since it has worked perfectly. However after uninstalling and deleting folders, and running ccleaner and clear temp files every time I restarted the PC to complete the uninstall, windows would after a restart immidiately start installing the 376.53 drivers again in the background. Trying to kill all processes in the back ground would only delay installation the the 376.53 got forced through every time:mad:.
I then tried uninstalling the driver againg, but this time not choosing to restart, I tried running the old 375.70 installation, however it would stop and say it didn't find any compatible hardware, and wouldn't install.
I then gave in and then went to geforce.com and downloaded 378.66 and tried to run that installer, however it came with the same message that the installer didn't find any compatible hardware.
So the only thing I could do was restart the PC, and then I waited on Windows 10 to force install 376.53. After that was done I ran the new 378.66 driver installation and it found my hardware, and I chose an "clean installation". The installation finished and I got rid of 376.53.... but not really the way I wanted . However 378.66 seems to run fine.

Pretty much that.

I have been using Wushowhide and have been fine.
Still rocking 368.81....
