Well in a couple of weeks we shall see the best value X79 (Socket 2011) processor come along. This is the new 3820 processor!

We have a sample from Intel and as per normal regime I've being doing some testing, this image shall speak for itself:-

At sub £250 this is a great CPU and it gets you the benefits of X79 without having to spend in the region of £400+ for a CPU.

Overclocking is very easy, CPU voltage to 1.375v in BIOS, 125FSB strab, job done. :D
 
A review site that the forum still stars out even though I believe they are a happy partnership again now has the chip at 4750mhz. They look very capable at a good overclock and I'm intrigued to see what price they come in at (hint hint gibbo!).

PS gibbo - can you try a higher multi the same as said website and see how much joy you have.

Think it's been known for a while that the next expected decent speed increase will be from Haswell in 2013. :( Ivy Bridge may bring some small improvements and increase in overclockability but I don't think people are expecting a massive change from Sandy.

the cpu performs around the same as an 1155 cpu
2011 boards cost pretty much the same as 1155 boards
memory is a flat cost across the board.

benefits?

x79 allows much higher overclocking potential on memory.

1866mhz is around the top end easily achievable figure on 1155 whereas we have consistently hit 2133MHz on every single 2011 cpu we have benched at OcUK.

something to bear in mind if your computing needs require memory speed to be high.

Can I ask, what changes did you need to make to get the RAM to 2133?

All valid points I agree (if you're counting 1155 'high end' boards with decent tri-SLI/tri-fire support in the price argument) however I just think this chip is going to be aimed at quite a niche market who want to play around with high end motherboards and maybe have a lot of memory bandwidth but can't afford the hex-core chips.

1155 is most likely going to remain the 'gamers/mainstream choice' as I can't see memory bandwidth suddenly being a big requirement. Even for those running a lot of video encoding etc you can still happily install 16GB (or even 32GB) of RAM in 1155 boards which is plenty for the vast majority of users.
 
Cant see any point in changing now as the difference is very slight. The only good thing i see with X79 boards is a good amount of sata ports thats all and that board is not cheap at all.
